Has anyone else noticed the quality of rpg games, especially those massive online rpgs, degenerating? I used to play Asheron's Call, but quit because all I seemed to be doing was levelling up. I had Diablo II for all of two weeks, and it starting taking days to get a level up! I miss old school rpgs man, I don't care about 3D, all I want are some nice graphics, good gameplay, and an rpg that'll take you 40 hours to beat. Like FF3! Man, I wish I didn't sell that game.
And that's another thing! Games like FF8 boast 40+ hours of gameplay, but that's just because there are so god damn movies and cut scenes! Get rid of these linear, boring, plotless rpgs, and let the user do something again!

My absolute fav rpg is Chrono Trigger. Get Bleem and the PS version, or an SNES Emulator and the ROM (unless you own the SNES and the game) I reccomend the SNES game, because there is no loading time.

Chrono trigger rocks, played it almost to completion on an snes emulator. My all time favorites were the Bard's Tale games for the C-64, they were great.

Square hasn't made a decent RPG since FF7. Though FF7 had some major story issues that kind of blew monkey nut, it was still an excellent game with tons of replay value. Every Square game since that has been royally suck, however.

bards tale series on the c64 was incredible i agree!
The one that wasted the most of my free time had to be Ultima 4 however, followed closely by Ultima 5. Both on the c-64 of course!

did aynone ever play Questron? that was cool too

have you played crono cross?? crono cross is good rpg action for the entire family. it has an awesome system (personally, i think it rivals ff7's) its got a cool story, and its just fun as hell to play. this is not your mother's rpg.

One of the best RPGs of all time is Alternate Reality: The dungeon, originally programmed for the Atari 800 line of computers. Besides the amazing graphics for a system developed in 1979, the game was amazing. It wasn't a linear story, which is something I don't always want in an RPG - then it's more like an interactive movie or something. You could do what you wanted - the main goal to get out of the dungeon. A very well done RPG, still hoping they'll make a modern PC version.

Posted by jrh1406 on Sep. 25 2000,07:04
Damn, almost forgot about my favorite PC RPG, Daggerfall, it was buggy as all hell, but the area you could play in was incredibly huge, with a whole lot of things you could do outside the main quest. mmmm can't wait for the sequel
Posted by Lordbrandon on Sep. 25 2000,07:23
dagger fall! that game was weak as shit

*you eat some green roots, munch munch

ok it wasent that bad, but the graphics and the engine blew big nuts

Posted by Lordbrandon on Sep. 25 2000,07:27
oh, and ff3 was the best final fantasy game by far ff7 was cool but it was a diffrent game than the rest of the series.
gimmie some of that magitek armor!
Posted by Bozeman on Sep. 25 2000,10:02
Do you mean the REAL FF3 (japanese) or do you mean the FF3 that is really FF6? (this was FF3 for super NES) If you mean the latter, I agree totally.
Posted by Bozeman on Sep. 25 2000,23:57
Like Vampire: The Masqureade? I'm in a LARP group, and it's pretty cool.
Posted by Vigilante on Sep. 26 2000,00:25
Egads... I ran into a couple LARP Vampire players at DragonCon 97 in atlanta, and they were creepy without exception.

I never liked vampire anyway. Mage is so much cooler.

Posted by pengu1nn on Sep. 26 2000,05:59
i thought ff2 was better than ff3, but of course they both kicked some ass.

crono trigger was good to
but what about real rpgs, the one/s with books and paper, with your imagination to supply the graphics?

Posted by pengu1nn on Sep. 26 2000,14:31
Vampire: The Masqureade is one
Shadowrun is another
and of course
D&D

i never played Vampire: The Masqureade, cause i've never been into the whole vampire thing, but as long as you like it

i was into D&D alot, so when ppl say shit about rpg's thats what i think of. i think it is better and makes you think alot more, but of course it is the same as voodoo around here and it's gonna make me flip out and kill someone cause i am a mighty/masterful/all powerful wizard that can shoot fireballs from my ass! (atleast thats what they tell everyone)

Secret of Mana ruled, but I wish it didn't take so long to get all weapons (except sword) up to lv 9. It took me 3 yrs of on/off play.

shadowrun, oh god yeah!
big decapitated hand floating around selecting things. it was great though, getting the assault cannon, turning invisible, and whomping on the last level. great music too
secret of mana was awesome, evermore was not, ff4-6 ruled (by japanese numerical system), allthough I can't say I've played tactics.
I'm personally looking forward to the Dreamcast RPGs coming soon (3 in october) that are supposed to have 40+ hours of play time (ff4 was 29 or so if I remember). if you haven't heard, dc.ign.com has lots of info.
Posted by Blain on Sep. 28 2000,02:40
Final fantasy 4-7 kicked total ass. Secret of mana was one of the best games ever…it’s a shame the sequel blew big chunks. However, more and more I find myself being drug into the unholy world of the FPS; I guess my superhuman finger speed is finally starting to pay off.

And starduck; shadowrun blew…….the shit out of every other game

Xenogears is my favorite, story depth is the key! I really liked ff7 & chrono trigger too. I never took the time to finish FF6 so i cant comment about that.i have noticed however that PC and console RPGs play differently, almost as if they are seperate catgories. i prefer consoles myself... as for linear vs non-linear rpgs, i have played some of these "freeform" RPGs, and while they sound good on paper, i find that they suck ass: you spend most of the time leveling up or figuring out what the hell you are supposed to do. what is needed is a linear plot, but one that can be majorly affected by the player (not unlike japanese yaru-dora, if anyone knows about these). so thats my 2¢.
Posted by kuru on Sep. 28 2000,11:42
i used to have a whole pile of shadowrun books.. until someone stole 'em. i liked shadowrun, but only played if there was no 'leveling up' or whatnot.. my friends and i just acted the shit out like it was real life, i guess it ended up being more like a giant ongoing soap opera.. only with better acting and a better storyline.

oooh yer forgetting something

Star ocean: The Second story was pretty damned good. nice graphics (fooking sprites!) and those oh-so-bad-voice-overs-that-0wnz-j00.

then theres Brave Fencer Musashi. more like a zelda (bah!) action game, but still, it was fun.

oh, and why did Diablo win an award for best RPG back when it was released?! its a fooking action/adventure game! d'oh!

Computer RPGs are awful nowadays. I have a love/hate relationship with Diablo 2..like I know it's only about skill/item collection, but I still play it.
The thing that's missing, I think, from RPGs is the idea of character development. Like how specific events happen to your character. That can never happen on a MMRPG, because everyone would cry "unfair!" for the one person who was chosen. Everyone wants to be Lord God Paladin Chosen Wizard One of the Anointed Light. But instead it's about going to the skeleton zone. Kill skeletons til I can move on to ghouls..and so on.

The Majority of the best RPG's ever were developed for the Super Nintendo.

Chrono Trigger has to be the best RPG ever made, along with the majority of the Final Fantasy series, expesially Final Fantasy Three (which is an incredibly long game, I don't think I have actually beat it to this day). Secret of Mana was another awesome title. And Earthbound, that game ruled. It and games like Mario RPG, were some of the first 'Non-Serious' RPG's.

Ohyeah, don't forget about Super Mario RPG ;P Man, I loved that game, there was just somehing about it.

Was I the only one that played Traffic Police 2070. It was like an action rpg. You looked down from the top and controlled a cruiser, and everything that happened in the city would spin the plot line. One game I played took 14 hours to beat. Another one took 79, with completly different endins. It rocked monkey balls.

how did i miss THIS topic, then?

ah well...

*top 1player RPG of all time: Chrono trigger
*top multiplay RPG of all time: none cos they all suck. some MUDs are fun tho.
*top pen&paper RPG of all time: any of them. the skill is in the dungeon master, not in the game. a good guy can make ANYTHING good.

Have you ever played ultima 7 or 8? those games were awesome. they had great plots and were fun. ultima 7 took me a loooong time to beat, and ultima 8 is fun enough to play several times through.
Posted by askheaves on Nov. 08 2000,15:14
As long as this thread is open:
Best RPG: ChronoTrigger (of course)
Second Best: Ys I&II for TurboGrafx16 CD. My god. That was one of the coolest game ever. It had the amazing fight engine of pushing your player toward the enemy. That was an attack. Awesome. The best part was the cutscenes and music which were absolutely amazing for such a crab-azz system.

Posted by Bluu on Nov. 08 2000,20:28
FF4 was what I sorta grew up on. Playing it recently I realize I never knew how to play it way back when... but anyway, FF6 was technically better. XG had the story, and they all had the music.

As for online, UO is the only game I've encountered where there's more than just hunting rat sprites/models. If anyone could point out another one, please, I'd love to know about it.
Haha D2 was fun until Diablo went down 3 times. The only reason it was popular was because it had instant results, and it was impossible to lose.

edit: Oh yeah I meant besides them social MUDs. Economy must be what interests me most, but the ability to own a planet in my favorite MUD was always good.

FF3 (FF6 in Japan) is by far the best RPG ever made...it boasted a huge storyline (You'd be hard pressed finding something cooler than that), very likeable characters, some neat combat options (Magitek armor, anyone?) and a sweet soundtrak (Well I was satasfied)...although the graphics section might not be top-notch, I think maybe Square should make a re-vamp and make it again, with a sweet engine and some more FMVs

Evidently the Shadowrun system is being made as a CRPG. Anyone do Fallout? I know it was discussed in some other thread, but hell, that plot and ending were excellent. All the little easter eggs with insider jokes were cool. Like finding the Tardis, or the UFO with a velvet Elvis Portrait.
