For those of you who don't know, detonate.net was registered and built from scratch by a guy called cr0bar. It was a personal site and it was based around his bastardisations of The Matrix, and several other geek flicks such as Hackers and Star Wars.The content was very popular. It was, in essence, the first of the 'bastardisations' that were often imitated throughout the internet but never really beaten. cr0bar has that legacy to his name.
Around the site (due to cr0bar forking out real dollars and buying UBB) sprang a set of discussion forums. These were mainly feedback for the various bastardisations and places for general chatter. Eventually, these whittled down to the chat boards, such as The Classroom, Rants and the requested Geek forum.
Through this site I have met some very talented and clever individuals -- in fact, I've got to say that this place has been home to the highest concentration of cool people I've met (outside meatspace, of course...).
The site got big. The data transfer got high. Playnet went down and so did cr0bar's way of keeping the site up and running without detriment to himself.
He decided to let detnet rest on its laurels and die, because it was more than he was prepared to give to keep the site running, and was not an accurate reflection of his aims and achievements. Fair enough. The domain detonate.net went onto ebay for auction.
The problem we then faced is we had a community, a strong-willed bunch of talented people who didn't want the community to die, who wanted to go on and communicate with each other. To paraphrase the parting words of cr0bar, detnet was not ready to return its component parts to the grander mechanism. Detnet was not yet burnt out!
Along came kbreak. He was a bit crazy and didn't seem to know much about the site, but he saw something he liked and he thought it worth saving. He spent hard-earned cash and bought the domain name. Not an amount of cash to snigger at over a community you hardly even know. Since then kbreak has tried hard to work for the greater good of detnet, to encourage discussion on the boards and to stop the leakage of members. For that, my hat goes off to him. He's done a good job and we're getting back to how it was. This is good.
That's the story of detnet. That's where it's been. That's where it is now. Where it goes from here ... who knows. It's a laugh.
Now, this bud's for you, RenegadeSnark. Kiss my fucking ass!
Detonate.net is not the site you were part of. Detnet is a community of people, and no matter how old school you were you don't go round fucking with posts! You were given moderator status in respect to your talents and high position within the old detnet, but because of you childish, arrogant, and downright stupid behaviour you nearly fucked things up.
To that, I say: FUCK YOU! Detnet is not you, it's not jason, it's not me and it's not kevin break. It's a bunch of people and we're a community.
If you don't like it, just get the fuck out! That's part of the internet. It's so big, you can lose yourself in it. If this is the path you're intending to take, I suggest you do so.
Anyway, I'm done. I have lots of other things to do and this has taken up time I'd have better spent doing work. Try to take on board what I've said before you come back, mmkay?
