alright, i'm getting a new box and i need a new monitor to go along with it. i was thinking of getting an lcd flat screen, mostly because i don't want a bigass crt taking up space on my desk at school. anyone own one who can give me suggestions or give me a reason not to buy one? i particularly would like some info about the size (looking to get a 17", but 15" if it's too expensive) and brand.

Samsung and Sony both make excellent screens. Samsung has a 15" with a TV tuner and video inputs in it including a Picture-In-Picture feature that you can watch any of your other inputs while working on your computer. It's pretty groovy.

Just never touch the screen and blow it off with a can of air very regularily.

yeah, i was thinking about getting the samsung 15" (go korean manufacturing! yay!;) but i never knew about the one you mention. sounds a little too groovy for me :p

and i read something about a 17" lcd being equivalent to an 18-19" CRT. i'm guessing they're measured differently?

I think lcd's are measured on the vert and crt's are measured like a tv, plus you get a certain amount of dead space included in the measurement of the crt.

Doesn't colour rendition for graphic arts purposes, suck in the collective opinion, on LCD's?

You can get some very good colour matching on LCDs if you tweak your colour via good video card software. It helps if you have a Pantone Process Colour book to work from though.

LCDs are still measured diagonal, but there is no cutoff at the edges like there is in a CRT monitor. 17" CRT is a 16.1" viewable area whereas a 17" LCD is 17".

LCDs are better for your eyes as they don't handle refreshes the same as CRTs.

Yes, but unless they've got a fast rescan time to match the refresh rate, anything moving faster than a sloth on Cali Bud will ghost terribly and generally look like ass.

Forget playing Q3A on those.

I have a KDS 17" flatpanel. There is no ghosting whatsoever. However, the contrast is fairly poor.
