Forum: Geek Forum Topic: can a cd-rw be bad.. started by: just_dave Posted by just_dave on Jun. 25 2002,18:17
I am working on the machine and the powersupply just so happened to go out. So I ordered them a new powersupply, took the old one out replaced it with a new one .. certified and everything ... hooked it up just like the old one.. powered up the machine and the burner begins smoke.. everything else worked fine .. the burner decides to smoke

that's perfectly normal ...a few flames are well within specs also. Yeah ...I'd go with faulty CD-RW on that one.

Will that cause the powersupply to go bad .. I know its possible but I have never seen it before .... I mean I dont want them to think I fried it .... which I dont think I did cause i hooked it up like have hooked up the last 25+ i have installed ... dave edit: the cdrw smells like burnt toast, I opened up the old power supply and it looks like you set off 4th of July inside.. stupid writer ... man sometimes it sucks to work on computers.. I don't know ...power's not really my thing. I'd be more willing to guess that the old power supply took out the CD-RW when it blew and that adding power back just let you know how bad the CD-RW was fux0red. But that would just be a guess. It's amazing that the old power supply didn't kill the HDD or the processor though ...they seem to be more sensitive to power then a CD burner. I would replace anything that smells bad ...my general rule of thumb. It works for everything ..milk, trash bags, standing water and women.

Did so, but didn't know the cd-rw was wrong until after the parts came in. I put the new powersupply, and new mobo in. The old mobo wasnt bad just the powersupply. I just added power back to the cd-rw after I made the change of powersupplies and it smoked. My guess is the ps took out the cd-rw .. bad shot on my behalf makes me look like I fried it... but i didnt do nething. dave Posted by Beldurin on Jun. 25 2002,22:09
Apparently mobos are fairly tough. I fried a power supply (by touching the circuit-board on the bottom of it with my finger while it was running...couldn't concentrate for the rest of the day ) but the mobo was unharmed.Of course, the first time I built a comp for myself, I had the voltage switch set to 230 instead of 115...that fried the mobo. And the RAM. Posted by just_dave on Jun. 25 2002,22:33
I have done that, except it was more like i couldnt concentrate for a week. We are taking classes on how to repair psu's. I have been shocked by a computer to many times to count. I sorta think I am addicted... dave Posted by Bob_the_Cannibal on Jun. 26 2002,00:42
115/60 ain't that bad, it's when you hit three phase, higer voltages, that hurts. you don't know "can't concentrate" until you get zapped by about 330 three phase. (industrial grade pump motors). It knocked me three feet back, and on my ass. and that was just a brush with the contacts. I couldn't see straight for a day... We worked with three phase 208 and 440(?) I think it was in Industrial Motors class... had to have the hours so I took it. We had to do lock outs and follow procedures to the t. I didn't get shocked with it thank goodness.. dave Posted by CNCJake on Jun. 26 2002,02:05
I think just_dave got one of the really good cd-rw drives. You know, the one that comes with the optional HIGH power laser. Of course it will smoke a little, that laser will burn shit up!

i've had a full mains 240v going through me for about 5 seconds. man that was fun. hell i could probably put half of my lifes problems down to stuff like that. either that or i wont admit i'm just lazy.

wrist straps are for pussies like those damn WWJD bracelets...What Would Jesus Do? He sure as hell wouldn't buy a stupid ass bracelet... Posted by just_dave on Jun. 26 2002,16:02
I remember when I worked in a music store doing component level repair, on guitar, and power amps, and mixing boards and things like that, my cousin used to help me. He got me the job there. Well we were working on a peavey cs800 .. 800watts bridged, 400 per side. I was like.. "You did discharage the compactiors right kev?" My cousin was like "duh yeah" So I reach in and begin working on it and then my cousin is like "Dude how do you discharge a compa.... then I screamed like a mother.. he hadn't discharged them .. it hurt like I don't know what..dave Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Jun. 26 2002,17:32
You think thats bad, I saw an electrician complete the connection between 2 peices of bus bar with his hand. 3 phase 270 volts at like 400 amps is not kind to skin, meat and bones. He would have probably said his hand hurt if it was still attached when he regained conscienceness. Posted by just_dave on Jun. 26 2002,17:35

I love when people say that. First thing out of my mouth is always "He would just hang around and whine to his daddy." For some reason these people think im going to hell. Personaly i ask WWDD. What Would Duke Do? He would fire up the chain gun, waste everyone, and say something witty. Works much better. Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Jun. 26 2002,18:13
Personally I prefer WWTD. What would Truman do? Nuke em. Rinse. Repeat. Posted by TheTaxMan on Jun. 26 2002,23:59
That's nothing. My instructor would walk around during exams and shock us with a two live wires connected directly to the power lines. This would continue until we were all twitching randomly on the floor. That's when he turned on the hoses and stuck the power cables in the water. Now you tell that to kids today;and they won't believe you. |
