I do this for my bots so i thought it would be fun to do one for the new beast in the family.

I just picked up a 1962 buick convertable.  It has a bit of front end dammage, needs a bumper and a paint job but the rest is in great shape.

The ride home was fun.  found out this car has 2 speeds.  This car loves to do 75 so its speeds are 75 and wanting to do 75.  Thing runs like a champ with its newly rebuilt 401 Nailhead motor (1337 will be the only one to get that).

Ill post/link some pictures at time goes on and work progresses.

Shouldn't this be in the "pimp" forum?  KILLER ride when you get that thing fixed up.
Posted by Wolfguard on Jul. 14 2002,22:30
ill move it to the sex fourm after it is done.  devil.gif  but for now its a geek project.

I'm imagining your ride will look like this when done?

Car that small with a 401?
Um, can you say *snort*?

more like this

< buick invicta >

That is the skylark (buick special).  Same car, smaller motor.

The 401 is what they put into station wagons to haul kids around in.  devil.gif

The nail head wasnt known for being the most high performance of engines but it had enough torque to take your house with you on a picnic and most had over 170,000 mile lifetime before being rebuilt.

Im guessing its got a powerglide 2 speed, or a turbo350 that need some attention.

Either way thats one hell of a car.

When your out at highways speeds it feels like it just floats over the road doesnt it?
Posted by Wolfguard on Jul. 15 2002,18:01
got the powerglide for now and it's like driving on air.

everthing seams solid in the trans for now.  it did take a little time to get everything pumped up from sitting for 8 months but once it did it did not even burp once.  once i get the body work done and figure out what's what in the elecrical system ill see what i can do about performance.

There is a lot of room under that hood.  Big block type room...  devil.gif

::cough::Ramjet 572::cough::
::cough::keith black 632::cough::

Why would you want a big block... they get such bad gas mileage.
Posted by Wolfguard on Jul. 16 2002,15:28
gas mileage does not apply to pre 70s cars since the term did not come into common use till then.

basicly stated i dont give a rats ass about milage since fuel is just there to be burned to make things go faster.

Ill think ill want the bit with the big belt that sits on top and sticks through the hood too...  devil.gif

YOU WANT A BLOWER.  Welcome to the forced induction club.  Might I recommend a Weiand 6-71 found < here >.  They work great if your going to use carbs.  They suck air through the carbs (which works better than blow through carbs), make alot of noise and are generally obnoxious.  Sounds good huh?  Now if you want to use EFI and get twice as much power as from the roots blower use one of < these > puppies.  They are just as loud and make much more power, especially if intercooled and you can't beat the throttle response.   The only down side is they dont give you the big honking bug catcher scoop hanging out of the hood, which most people like for your application.

The carb route is much cheaper and easier to tune but you cant beat the "rip your eyes out through your asshole" power the efi + centrifugals make.

Oh and you knew I was kidding about the gas mileage right?

Well duh.  injection is nice but i would rather be blown  devil.gif

I can see that once again i have slipped out of date with the new toys on the market.  thanks for the links!

im still not sure of this "gas milage" thing you speek of :)

I need a front bumper for this beast.  If anyone knows of a place i can find one let me know.  if you find one in a junkyard let me know.  ill pay for it plus shipping plus the money for a case of "good" beer for your time.

Thanks

Do you know what other year bumpers fit?  Theres a classic car junk yard not to far from here.  Ill look this weekend.

Also I think that during your rebuild you should slap in one of these..

You sure could, but then theres no room for people in the car.  Better get used to driving from the roof.

And in case anyone was interested.

ok, real work was done to the car today!

Removed the bumper and the damaged fender.  Found new bumper and fender and a shop manual for the beast.

Will get some pics up by the end of the weekend.

Dont listen to 1337.  you can put any motor in any car with a steel warehouse, a torch and a mig machine.

Duh....uhm.

what exactly are:

I know what a torch is, I have a good idea on what a steall warehouse is, I'm not sure on a mig machine....something that makes russian fighter jets? Get it! HA HA HA...okay....I'll stop now. lookaround.gif

Mig==Metal inert gas.

Its a welding machine.

if you dont know that then kill all dreams of sticking that motor in your geo.

Hey hey hey, I was the guy who put the 355 in the chevette.  And yes, mig, tig and arch welders are all but required for any of the "fun" projects.

How far down can you dial your mig wolf?
Posted by Wolfguard on Jul. 22 2002,19:24
if i run pure argon i can weld beer cans end to end but i have this theroy on structures.  If i have to turn down my machine to weld it, it's not going to be strong enough for my needs.  :)
Posted by just_dave on Jul. 22 2002,20:53
<newbie>Ok dumb question,  besides argon what all gases are used to MIG with?  I am thinking about getting a MIG welder</newbie>

dave
Posted by Wolfguard on Jul. 23 2002,13:23
for welding Aluminum you need to run straight argon.  if your going to be welding a lot of aluminum get a machine with a spool gun.  this holds the wire spool right on the gun and it keeps the wire from making those pretty birds nests.

for steel a 75% CO2 argon mix is used.
Posted by just_dave on Jul. 23 2002,16:26
Argon and CO2.  Got ya there.  I know what Co2 Costs but whats the price on argon is it super expensive?

50# tank of argon is ~$75 and the mixed gas is about ~50

lasts for about 5-800 hours of welding.
