ok, here goes:Friend of a friend's computer. Want to install Win98SE. Win98SE install disk is an illegal one, doesn't inculde files to make it a bootable disk. When using other Win98 disk as a boot disk to get into dos (start computer with CDROM support), dos boots fine, but get the "error: volume not found" error when trying to access the E: drive (cd). I have had this exact same problem before a while back on this computer. I don't remember what caused it, or how i solved it or got around it. I need a solution to this. If you are trying to install Win98 off of a Win98 Resource disk (One that only contains the .cab files only, is not bootable and doesn't contain a setup.exe) then it's not going to work at all, you need to get an entire Win98 CD. If your CD does have a setup.exe and the problem is just booting from it (I'm assuming that you've selected CDROM as the primary boot device in the bios) then you can boot into your computer's existing OS (if any) and run the setup.exe from there. You can also copy the CD into a folder, boot back to DOS and run the install from there. If this is not an option because of a lack of current OS then you need to add the correct CDROM drivers (should have come with the CDROM or with the computer when purchased) to your boot floppy (you can make a boot floppy from any existing Win 98 computer).

here's what i have:Win98 disk. not what i want to install, but is bootable. Win98SE disk. what i want to install, but not bootable. No OS currently installed. When using the Win98 disk to boot to dos, i can switch over to the E: drive, but trying to use dir or any other command at the E: promt results in a 'error: volume not found' error. I know i have run into this problem before on my computer, but i don't remember what i did to fix it or what caused it.... Now that i think of it, it might have been someting stupid like an incorrectly connected/jumpered master/slave IDE problem...... i dunno. Can you read any other CD's from the drive while in DOS? It might be the cd reader doesn't read that particular CDR without correct drivers or not at all.My personal pref is to copy a Win 98 CD setup files to a separate partition and install to the desired system partition from there. Have you tried booting with a Win98SE boot floppy? It will load a generic CDR driver that you can use to install your Win98SE CD install. If that doesn't work then you need some wack (technical term) driver to see your CDR in DOS. I threw out an old CDR because it would only work with the drivers that came with it and not any of Microsoft's drivers. As always check the HCL to make sure your device is listed as a supported piece of hardware.

ok, if the cd drive can read the disk well enough to boot from it, why wouldn't it be able to read it once dos is booted?it won't read any cds once in dos. i doubt its a driver issue, since the comp is relatively new, and the generic atapi drivers on win instalation disks have never failed me. im really thinking its an IDE problem, like incorrectly set jumper on the drive, but feel free to keep bouncing ideas my way. Why not just install 98, then put in the SE disc afterwords and it should ask if you want to upgrade.
