I'm thinking of asking for a digital camcorder for my brithday.

I have no idea on the topic matter. I've been spending some time doing research but most of the stuff hasn't helped all that much. I'm looking for something in the price range of £500 which is about $700 i guess.

So far the only decent ones i have only found are the

< Canon MV500i (or ZR50MC in USA i think) >
&
< Sony DCR-TRV340 >

The sony seems to have more features and a higher optical zoom but the canon offers greater manual control.

I'm having trouble finding out what all the features are exactly on both cameras and if anyone knows anything about this area i would be extremely grateful.

also the sony apparently does have the manual controls in software but needs them to be "unlocked". Depending on how risky this would be this might influence my decision of course if anyone knows of a better product for the price range that would be even better.

Visual-quality-wise, the single most important feature is 3 CCDs... 3-Chip cameras will give you much cleaner images vs. 1-chip (but they cost more, of course =)... A decent lens is important too (you want a nice hefty glass one, not a tiny plastic bubble). Most other features are just gimmicks...

Another thing to consider is Digital8 vs MiniDV.

Personally I'd go with the MiniDV < DCR-TRV25 > which is close to the price range you were looking for.

And 10x Optical Zoom is more than you'll ever need.
