I need to reformat my master hard drive, but will I be able to access my media files on my slave drive when the format is complete? I installed the hard drive after I got the computer, so I was wondering if it would recognize it...

Please help me!

yup.
Posted by SHOUTcasterPat on Mar. 23 2002,14:25
I see how it is...next time you little script kiddies need help running your Linux boxes, I will remember this.
Posted by liquid metal on Mar. 23 2002,16:54
I don't know if you're being sarcastic or just blind, but incubus answered your question quite clearly.
Posted by Spydir on Mar. 23 2002,18:12
no offensive, but if you don't know if your harddirves are even installed right, I don't think I'd be accepting help from you with my linux boxes, that I rarely have questions about anyways...

gah. linux is one big lesson, like life is ;)

ShoutCasterPAT, what part of 'yup' did you not understand?

I'll not post next time, jeeeeeeez :p

Hi, Inky, go easy on the young feller.  Break him in e a s y.
Besides, it's too much fun to read your posts.

So, um, *pat*, how did it work out?
Posted by SHOUTcasterPat on Mar. 26 2002,18:18
I'm sorry for not understanding your one-word post, and it's okay with me if you post again.  :D  And "editor", I don't need to be broken in unless you are talking about the new detnet, because I have been familiar with this site since January of last year and joined the forums in September.  And no, this isn't a flame so please don't get mad.  :p

edit: Oh yeah, the format worked great...thanks again ;)

Yes, it will work. And as long as you do not format the drive with all the music/movies/whatever on it, those will all still be there.

If you have installed a Promise card or something like that, you will have to reinstall the drivers for it after you reinstall your OS after you have formatted your main drive to get it to show up, but it is still going to be there.

The only way the data won't be there is if you format the drive it's on, and the only way the drive itself won't physically be there is if you unplug it.

:)

........ as if she said something astoundingly geekish.

Quit chasing the digital poo-tang, cause you're never gonna catch it; electrons travel fast4r than you do.

Pat: the only problem i've ever had with drives is moving them from one computer to another (which does wierd things sometimes....), and incorrectly connecting/jumper-ing the master and slave after routine maintance in da box.

remember:
Heat kills your CPU.
Insufficient RAM kills your HDD.
Wrong refresh rate kills your CRT.
Cigerette smoke kills your CDR.

That has to be one of BF's best posts ever.
That was elegant.

Short and sweet, and the spelling is almost perfect, 'cept for he wrote "poo-tang"

What is a "promise" card?  I am not familiar with this term.

Promise is a company that makes low end IDE/RAID controllers.  They are most know for their UltraDMA IDE cards (to get faster performance then your onboad IDE when using newer drives) and their IDE RAID controllers that let you mirror and stripe your IDE drives.

that's the nice way of putting it...  I like to say, promise makes ghetto IDE/RAID controllers.

If it's ghett0 hardware that you're after, look no further.

hehe ...I just spent an hour on that site.  That is some funny shiznitz.

RAID=Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives

RAID is not always redundant (striping without parity) and not typically inexpensive.  The acronym doesn't really fit ...kinda like TWAIN.  For 50 points, what does TWAIN stand for?

TWAIN = Technology Without An Interesting Name
RAID = Redundant Array of Independant Disks

Um, I'm pretty sure RAID is Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, not Independent Disks since RAID drives are, by definition, related to one another.  And apparently, the link says that that is not what TWAIN stands for although, personally, I prefer the funny definition to the real one.
Posted by Wiley on Apr. 05 2002,23:00
What is RAID?
RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks. A RAID array is a collection of drives which collectively act as a single storage system, which can tolerate the failure of a drive without losing data, and which can operate independently of each other.

I think the latter (Independant) was added because Inexpensive is kinda misleading  ....but then again Independant is too.

TWAIN is Technology Without An Interesting Name  ...I don't buy the other definition.  It was actually on a test I have taken before.

How... heartwarming to  hear 'Quit chasing after digital poontang'.

Just reminds me of how much I really do kick ass. ;)
