Ok, I've got 2 pc's, I want them linked and sharing the same internet connection. Currently I am using windows built in File and Printer Sharing as well as the built in Internet Connection sharing. I've read alot of comments saying that it's not totally secure. Is there any other programs you guys recommend for both these applications? Cheers in advance. Posted by DuSTman on Mar. 20 2002,14:16
Nothing's totally secure. Consider using unpopular tools. Security through obscurity may not be absolutely secure, but will probably deter someone who's just playing about. Posted by ShakerMaker on Mar. 21 2002,07:11
Yes, I meant what is better to use than the windows version. Any 3rd party aps you suggest? Posted by Wiley on Mar. 21 2002,16:20
I'll give you the same answer I gave Caseman ... get thee a < Linksys > proxy router. Or any proxy-router/switch. There are dozens of them out there right now and they are getting cheaper every day. The benefits to this solution are:1. Routing - The unit is the gateway ...no ICS needed. 2. Firewall - so people outside can only get to the things you want them to get to. 3. Switch - So you can plug your other computers into the unit without another hub. 4. Stability- It's hardware, so it won't crash. 5. DHCP - It's ready for your nex LAN party ...anybody can plug in and be on your network with no configuraition. 6. Platform independant - Windows, Nix, Apple ...good to go. I would go for a router with a firewall, screw software.

Router with firewall is probably your most secure option. Firewall software for your PC is somewhat less secure than having built into the router.A couple of years ago I knew some guys who were trying to build a completely hardware firewall on an FPGA. I have no idea how far they got, because both of them started crying when they were asked how you change the ruleset. Posted by Jynx on Mar. 22 2002,01:50
I agree with the Linksys option. I've got one, and it r0x0rs. Things are soo much easier now, plus I'm not too worried about intruders. If anyone can get past the Router/Firewall + ZoneAlarm, then they deserve whatever they can grab.
