Which is better?

I prefer usb 2.0.  Much faster.

USB 2 is faster but there are more devices out right now that use firewire.  It depends what kind of hardware you have more then anything right now.  If you have a video camera that you want to connect and you happen to have a Sony Vaio laptop or an Apple laptop then you have firewire built in.  USB 2 is not yet built into any laptops.  Although I think IOGear has a PCMCIA card with a USB 2 port on it  ...but the transfer rate most likely suffers in the conversion.  I personaly have a set of firewire drives that I use to switch between computers and my laptop and they perform just fine for my data storage needs.

I think firewire is better, at least for external harddrives...

Carnivore I have one question for u.

Why?!
Usb 2.0 is way faster.

Wait about a year,  usb will once again be victorious.

firewire.

ever since I got that shitty USB dsl modem a while back I've hated all things USB...

USB 2.0 is a little faster than firewire right now. But later in the year firewire is expected to keep doubling as the new standards come out.

Carnivore, then there will be usb 3.0.

USB has been around a long time, and will be around for a long time.

Besides it's just competiton. W/o USB, FireWire wouldn't exist.

USB has a shared bus so the more devices the less bandwidth per device. i don't think fireware has that problem. i may be wrong but more difital devices use fireware anywayz.

firewire is just a lot better thought out standard then usb ever was/will be.

you don't know what you're talking about veistran.

maybe u all are right.

USB may be past it's prime.

Remember, we're not here saying USB is the devil and we hate it and wouldn't ever use it, just that firewire is better. :D

usb has been around for a long time...

maybe firewire should step up...

maybe not...

USB (both 1.x & 2.0) has only one bus master, the computer USB root controler, meaning that if two devices need to talk, all the data need to be processed by the computer.

On the other hand, IEEE 1394 (aka FireWire, iLink) can have has much bus masters as devices that can be plugged in. For exemple, you can plug many computers together and use FireWire as local network (FireNet). On all Apple computer with built-in FireWire ports, you can boot the machine in FireWire target mode, transforming your mac in an expensive FireWire hard drive (until you reboot, that is). Also FireWire has a quality of service scheme where a device can request for a quantity of bandwidth and be guaranteed that the bandwidth will be available. FireWire can supply much more current to bus powered devices. You know, charging your iPod directly by the FireWire port, no other wires... yummy :)

For those who are saying that firewire would never have existed if intel didn't created USB first, you are wrong. Apple (yes, Apple created this standard, and this is why every manufacturer must pay a 1$US royalty for each IEEE port by device built), created firewire first because there was no other consumer-level protocols that could support digital video. Also, if Apple would have made their original iMac and white & blue G3's, the USB standard would never have taken off.

Apple is currently playing with FireWire 2.0, 800mbps of bandwidth and should be available on high-end machines by the end of the year.

the apple whore has spoken.
