I've got a friend who's going to be upgrading to an XP 1900 system. (Nice, eh?) He's got a geForce2 in there right now, but wants to flex some nuts with a DX8 part. I'm kinda up in the air about it - leaning towards the Radeon 8500 at the moment.

Anyone opposed to that? No fanboyisms, please. We all know ATI fucked up big time with their drivers and the Quack III cheating. They fixed that now.

So - is it worth the $20 for the Radeon 8500?

normally I'd say go for the raedon because they did fix their problems, but I'd say stick with the gf3 and use the 20 bucks to go a little further with either a nicer power supply then whatever he's got now/would get, or maybe to go towards a little extra memory.

I have a dislike for ati video cards because of their less than steller history of releasing new drivers in a timely fasion, etc...

i'd have to go with the radeon. its got a higher visual quality with a negligible lower framerate. i mean whos gonna notice a differece of 125fps instead of 140fps!

or you could hang on for the kyro 3 if that ever decides to come out.

Yeah, drivers was my main concern with the Radeon.

However, since it's not me, I don't envision him downloading the latest drivers every other day. They've fixed their problems for now - Smoothvision works, XP doesn't sux0r, and their faggoty little Quack III issue is gone. Honestly, who the hell did they think they were fooling?

Besides the dumbasses at tomshardware.com - jeez, "accidental image quality issues" were the problem? And "the Radeon kills the Ti500" - "a clear victory"? Yeah, and monkeys are going to start migrating south using my asshole as home base.

Thank god for new drivers.

Radeon has higher frame rates, and higher visual quality.... I don't see the issue....

Edit: Fuck dude, the Raedeon has higher framrates then a GeForce Ti500, I figured you were talking about that, go Raedeon!

I distinctly said no fanboys. :p (And stating that the R8500 beats the Ti500 is definitely fanboyism.) Check Anandtech, FiringSquad, or any of the other intelligent review sites, and you'll find the R8500 nestled neatly between the Ti200 and Ti500. Tom's BiasWare ... well, he can o/c a system like a motherfucker, but when it comes to 3D - to quote South Park - "Dude, what the fuck is wrong with German people?" ( Not directed at Liney! )

Edit: Going Radeon. Took a bloody eternity to find a seller who'd accept international orders though! Damned capitalist pigs - our dollar may not be worth as much as yours, but we have as much right to splurge as you do (as evidenced by my 2GBs of RAM and Ti4400)

well do you want an opinion or not? the radeon does have better visual quality and negligible frame rate differance this isnt a "fanboy" opinion this is a statement from a guy who spent a whole week going through every review he could find on the internet plus talking to people who actually OWN the products not companies who get sent cards that have been beefed up more than the retail or OEM versions (you did realise that the cards anandtech get arent the ones you actually buy).

i don't have a gforce or a radeon so how about that for an unbiased opinion! i don't want to sound like i'm ranting too much but you wanted an opinion and people gave you them people generally take sides from actually owning the cards and therefore using them but i do know what you mean buy the EXTREME people who buy one card and then NEVER try another manufacturer.

Go with the GeForce.  It offers a slightly better price:performance ratio IMO, and the company is also relatively quick about releasing new drivers.  ATI has always really slacked in that department.

In all likelyhood, by the time a game is pushing either of those two cards, you'll be wanting an upgrade for it anyhow, so why not save the $20?

I'm sorry, I figured the Radeon 8500 dominating 3DMarks2001 Hall of Fame would say something about it's speed.  Perhaps I was wrong.

Edit: In any case it's much faster then a Ti200.

which is impressive considerin 3Dmark is optimised for gforce cards.
