Forum: Geek Forum Topic: So I just installed Win2K...and it sucks? started by: Blain Posted by Blain on Sep. 19 2001,00:04
In the past 24 hours IE6.0 has locked up about 3 or 4 times, my sound card stopped my computer form shutting down 2 times (with win2k drivers installed) and several win2k programs have crashed while installing. I also can’t assign F12 as a hotkey for anything. On an interesting side note win98 hadn’t given me any problems for several months before I killed it.I don’t, however, care about any of that; my system seems to have settled down and become stable, and most of what I need installed already has been. My main problem is that all gaming performance has gone down the shitter. My 3Dmark 2K1 score went from 3302 to 1267 (a drop of about 60\%) and in actual gaming my average FPS have gone from ~80 to ~28. I knew that I should expect a drop in performance, but this is unacceptable (I tried several drivers, including the latest). Also the digital out on my Soundblaster Live randomly died. I am running a 900Mhz T-Bird and 512 megs of PC133 ram, should I be seeing such a drastic change? My guess is that something is horribly fucked up, but I don’t know what. Anyone have any ideas? ------------------ Posted by ASCIIMan on Sep. 19 2001,00:41
quote: Make sure you have the latest manufacterer drivers installed... several of the sound drivers included with 2k are complete and utter crap.
quote: This will happen if you haven't installed the < VIA 4-in-1 > drivers for your chipset and (if you have an AMD northbridge) the AMD < AGP drivers & Win2k patch >
quote: Make sure you download the latest < Live!Ware drivers >. The drivers that come with Win2k are crap.
quote: It's the drivers, mostly. Also make sure you download all the system updates from < Windows Update >, especially < Service Pack 2 > and the various compatibility updates. Posted by Blain on Sep. 19 2001,01:41
I sincerely thank you good sir. I installed the 4 in 1 drivers (I had totally forgotten about them) and my video performance is back to normal. Thanks to you I also realized that I had only installed SOME of the soundblaster drivers and am currently working on getting that damn thing properly working. You are my hero ------------------ Posted by askheaves on Sep. 20 2001,02:07
I'll be damned! So, it wasn't the operating system itself, but your useage of it? Well, slap my ass and call me a bitch!Sorry. I hate when the easiest answer has to be the right one. Like me trying for 2 hours to boot off of some floppies, thinking that the drive was broken... or the cable... or the power supply... etc, until I looked at the disk and it wasn't formatted. Sorry, Leet has this problem. You see, he can't make one ounce of sense in his posts. What he meant was: problem found - IE6 Though, I run Win2K SP1 with IE6 and I have no problems whatsoever. Posted by The_Stomper on Sep. 24 2001,14:33
lol @ miNus.Personally, I would've stopped after "IE" and not even bothered to look at the "6". Internet Exploiter is some nasty shit in any version. Bust out some NetScrape. Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Sep. 25 2001,12:35
IE6 isnt that bad when you compare it to the previous shit. and soudblaster live cards are fucking annoying to install sometimes especially when you move it to another pci slot and forget to remove the drivers and reinstall them. can you say re-format hard drive? ------------------ |
