alrighty.... here's a toughy for ya...

when I modprobe usb-ohci, I get an error telling me that it failed because of something with IO's and IRQ's (2.4.2 kernel, btw). I'm asking this because I'm trying to get the Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL USB modem to working with my linux box (get directions from < here >). This seem to be my area of stuck-ness, because everything else *seems* to be flowing smoothly along as it should according to the HOWTO, once I get to modprobe'ing usb-ohci (anyone else find that kinna funny sounding?).

Anyone got any form of idea? I loaded everything I need, recompiled kernel and modules about 8 times now (and yes, I did mv /lib/modules/2.4.2/ before compiling new sets of modules), and I still get the same error... thing I should just try 2.4.1 or 2.4.3?

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but try running "modprobe usb-uhci" instead. Every computer I've used linux on (that has usb) uses uhci, not ohci. Or I might be wrong :)

Also, if you still have problems, try upgrading to 2.4.3.

I tried that, too. Same error.

I'm gonna try one more compile of 2.4.2 with USB as complete modular, then I'm going to 2.4.3...

the modem can only do USB...

I'll probably end up buying a router, or my friend said he can get me a Cisco 2600 for dirt cheap...

Or you could just get one of those Cable/DSL routers (Linksys, NetGear, etc.) with the built-in 4-port switches. I know the Linksys one has a built-in DSL modem that works with most ISPs. You can get them for under 贶. Or is you already have your switch, you can get the 1-port version for less. That way you're not tying up a computer just to share and manage your connection.
