if you've never used linux before, i'd suggest you try redhat. i think the latest version is 7 or something. the installation isn't too bad, so it shouldn't be too hard to get up and running. then go through the howto's and other documentation on the cd. you'll get the hang of it soon enough.

catknight - linux would suck if I didn't know how to use it, but I do.

don't get red hat 7, go for 7.1. 7 is buggy as hell.

A lot of people recommend mandrake (newest version 8) as a great starter for linux newbies, and I'm no different about it.

Don't just jump into it thinking "I learned windows in a month, I can learn linux in a week!". Linux is a very complicated OS and takes time, and don't forget to RTFM, because if you don't, you'll fuck shit up. Trust me.

read every manual you can get your hands on, tinker, learn on your own, and when you have a question, read a manual, read a different manual, read the first manual again, and then if you're still confused ask someone in the most detailed question you can.

Well i don't know about you, but what I do know, is that my personnal linux boxen has 91 days 2 hours and 53 minutes of uptime, and still doing fine as the first day I booted.

I have RedHat 7.0 w/ most of the updates and a home-compiled 2.2.18 kernel.

Im planning on using Linux this summer and I have never used it before and have no experiance with it. so what do you think the best Linux distobution would be the best in this situation?

linux sucks it keeps crashing on all my machines here at work. i've tried the newest versions of redhat and suse and they both stink!

well i think my problems stem from the fact that they keep giving me shitty 2 gig scsi hard drives that don't work right

oh yeah and they gave me this cd drive that still uses caddies for one machine. it ended up putting a huge ringed scratch on their suse disc. thats what they get haha

anyway... I never got FreeBSD to install on anything, so I never played with it. Fuck it... you use one Unix, you've used (almost) all of them.

Anyway, smartsnake, I'd recommend the < Slackware > distro. It's one of the oldest, predating Red Hat by a few years. The install isn't as pretty and nice, but it's a remarkably solid starting point. And the default install is very close to what you'll probably end up using... Red Hat always takes a while to get working the way you want it.

Does anyone have any experience with Debian? I got the SPARC version from them, and it won't let me overwrite files in /etc/. That means I can't edit my config files without using two consoles - one to edit, and one to rm the file before I save it from the editor
