i broked the computer today.i installed this LiteSTEP thing because i thought it was cool. i didnt like it, and uninstalled. now the computer isnt running a shell. its helluva weird. there isnt a start menu bar or anything. i have to do the cntr-alt-delete thing so i can open up the task mamnger. from there, i try to run explorer.exe and it just opens my documents. with taht i can acess everything, but its not good. my mouse buttons dont work (i cant go back/forward in the internet with it) and uh.... it really sucks. i talked to a couple of friends. they tried to help but nothing worked. so im desperate. someone, help! i backed everything up... ready to reformate if i have to btw, if you dont hear from me in a day or 2, my mother has killed me! ------------------ Posted by ASCIIMan on Apr. 30 2001,00:31
Yo! Open up Notepad, DOS "edit", etc. and open your system.ini file. There should be a "shell=" line towards the beginning. Either delete this line, or change it so it says "shell=explorer.exe". This should make things work.

quote: yeah, just don't change it to "shell=progman.exe" on a school computer... you'll be kicked off all networked computers, and if you touch one 3 days out of school suspension, and probably some sort of court referal... I know, trust me... (note - I never touched a networked computer after the little "mishap") ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Apr. 30 2001,02:01
code: thats the whole file. damn. next solution! ------------------ Posted by ASCIIMan on Apr. 30 2001,15:00
Hmmm...Have you tried inserting a new line at the beginning of the file with "shell=explorer.exe"? that should work, if not, I'll try to find something else that might fix it for you. Posted by Rhydant on Apr. 30 2001,20:01
yeah... but it didnt work.im just gonna reformat. i backed up my stuff. im ready to take the plunge... heh, sounds like im getting married ------------------ Posted by ASCIIMan on Apr. 30 2001,21:08
Actually just reinstalling over your current installation should work.Of course, it's always nice to have a clean installation of Windows (weird bugs tend to accumulate if you don't reinstall every couple years or so). Posted by ASCIIMan on Apr. 30 2001,21:14
SHIT!!! You don't have to reinstall! You neglected to mention you were running Windows NT/2000 - that changes EVERYTHING.Okay, here's what you do: Put the following text in a text file: code:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 and save as removels.reg Now run the file. Reboot. Things will work. This message has been edited by ASCIIMan on May 01, 2001 at 04:17 PM Posted by Rhydant on May 01 2001,14:08
ok.... now im screwed. i tried to reinstal windows. it wet good until it started looking for hardware. it looked for everything, found it, but then rebooted and DID IT AGAIN! i tried doing some stuff with a book disc and BIOS, but im just gonna call up a friend of mine, he's pretty smart with the computers and whatnot. he thinks he can fix it without reformating.if bets comes to best, my mom will buy a new HD w00t! ------------------ Posted by pengu1nn on May 03 2001,15:41
i use litestep all the time. its great. it's the only reason i'm still using windows (except i'm not very good with linux, but who is?) you can change everything in it to what you want. and you don't have to formatjust do what asciiman said, all it did was replace explorer with litestep, just change it back and you'll be back in exploder again Posted by DeadAnztac on May 04 2001,01:51

Damn. I wish I'd have read this thread earlier! I run litestep right now under WindowsNT 4.0 Workstation, which is (I assume) what you were running it under. I've been running it for about a year and a half now, and have been through all of the problems you have gone though before, but stuck with it through all of the little bugs since it looks so good. The problem you're having is not uncommon; one of the lines in an FAQ at the liteStep site addresses it. Basically, you do that registry key bit someone mentioned above. I'm curious though; what skin were you using? Had any other problems with it? What did/didin't you like about it overall? hrm... im going through computer withdrawls. i havent been on one is so long... it feels like weeks...i should get my computer back tomorrow. took it to the tech guys at my mom's office building. they said they'd fix it for free. i just hope they put win2k on it. if they didnt... i cant do anything about it.... hehehe, beggars cant be choosers.... ------------------ Posted by KL1NK on May 06 2001,01:05
