now running setup, and all is well...

Incubus, I'm with you that there is no reason to run out & upgrade if you've stayed current. I'm mostly excited about glibc 2, which has a lot of new cool stuff like threads etc. I've got libc2 to compile, but every time I've tried swapping out my library I wound up trashing the whole OS

I'm burning the Slackware Linux v.8 ISO as I write this. This release has a bunch of stuff that I was never able to successfully compile, including :

- glibc v.2 (featuring lightweight threads! w00tah!)

- XFree86 v.4

- KDE v.2.1

- Apache incl. PHP, mod_perl, and mod_ssl

I'll let you know how it goes...

I'm not too sure why everyone w00ts when a new version of a distro comes out ... cos, like, if you stay current and upgrade to new packages you want ... your old distro has all the stuff this new distro has

If you're truely l33t, you have to believe that BSD is superior to linux. Honestly.

If you're truely l33t, you have to double post. Honestly.

I'm getting the ISOs now. Are they bootable?

In that case, I don't want to be l33t. BSD has its strongpoints but the bottom line is that the GNU OS tools are much better than the BSD ones.

The Linux Kernel also wins against all BSDs for PC hardware compatibility. The Linux Kernel is also developed at a more rapid pace than the others.

Give me a Linux system any day.

the truly l33t are not blinded by ideology; they care not about Microkernel vs. Monolithic Kernel. They simply use what works best on the most hardware.

and that would be... er, Linux.

I'm sorting slack now, but im stuck on getting my DHCP to work :/
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Aug. 25 2001,01:36
can't help you now. I've never used Linux with DHCP.

However, the file /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 is the init script for your IP settings, and I know that it has a variable you can change + instructions to enable DHCP.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your input dude, but it's not that.

Basically I had 2 NICs (i was planning to make this box a router) and then what you do is

modprobe the cards in the order you want them assigning (my netgear is the one connected to my cablemodem so i want that to be eth0)

so i do

/sbin/modprobe natsemi # this makes my netgear my eth0

/sbin/modprobe via-rhine # this makes my dlink eth1

eth1 goes to a hub.

Thing is, I cant get DHCP to work unless i take out the dlink card - it makes no sense at all.

If anyone can help I'll be very impressed.
