Forum: Geek Forum Topic: divx shrinking started by: kornalldaway Posted by kornalldaway on Dec. 11 2001,00:11
my main problem is that all the movies i download are around 720MB in size and they don't really fit on my CD. so i decided to shrink them in size. so far i have only been playing around with one movie.i have tried using VirtualDub to run the movies through it and shrink the size slightly by reducing framerate from 25 to 23.97 that seemed to work somewhat, but had a lot of very strange effects on the movie whenever i try to play it at the beginning i have little freezes and if i junp to a certain location the movie switches, but the sound starts playing either a little bit behind or there is no sound at all main question is, what other software can i use to decrease the size of the movie (in MB) by about 60 megs? aside from dropping framerate a little, and the sound quality is sorda low as is so i want to leave it as is. i am also aware that topics like this one have already been posted, but i didn't get anything that would help me from those Posted by Der_Teufel on Dec. 11 2001,00:42
You could leave the framerate the same and just drop the bitrate on the audio, if it's really high. Or you could cut the credits out, if they haven't been cut out already.

Don't touch the video unless you're cutting it straight out. Audio is pretty safe to toy with - just don't take it to the level of staticky crap. Recompressing the credits is also a good call.By recompressing credits and audio I've lopped 50MB off a movie, and no one noticed the difference. Posted by veilside on Dec. 11 2001,14:45
you shouldn't mess with the framerate. get a bitrate calculator, they're fairly accurate. i dunno about divx 4 though, the one i have is for divx 3 low-motion.edit: < http://www.divx-digest.com/software/advanced_bc.html > This message has been edited by veilside on December 12, 2001 at 09:47 AM Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 11 2001,17:30

i don't want to touch the sound at allthe quality on the movie i am working with is pretty low as is at 32000Hz i tried running it through again and lowering the quality a little bit and it isn't becomes really horrible haven't tried anything else yet Posted by SLATE on Dec. 11 2001,19:30
quote: Why not jst change the dimensions.. THe fucking word escapes me right now, but change it from 640x480 to a smaller size, yet keep the same ratio. Posted by kornalldaway on Dec. 11 2001,19:56
it is pretty small as is, but i will try changing the size a bitedit: forgot to ask, is there any other software that would simply cut the lat 10 mins or so off of divx. i seem to be having a lot of trouble with that in virtual dub, it takes a while and the movie also comes out messed up This message has been edited by kornalldaway on December 12, 2001 at 03:57 PM Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Dec. 11 2001,22:48
adobe premier or any 3rd party crap like multiquence or similiar shit will crumble the biscuit for you.------------------ Posted by kornalldaway on Dec. 12 2001,01:05
i found a rather crappy little program called avichop and it was enough for me to get rid of last few minutes of titles and fit the movie on the cdi figured since i don't ever watch the titles why bother going through all the troulbe of converting and compressing different things if i can just chop the end of the movie off thanks for your help everyone Posted by directhex on Dec. 28 2001,09:44
on this subject, anyone know why you can fit over 750mb of VCD onto a 700mb disc?--directhex Posted by Wiley on Dec. 28 2001,16:46
