I have the following set up on my slackware 8.0 box: DRI, Xfree86 4.1.0, linux 2.4.7, and an ATI Rage Fury Pro.

I am having problems getting the 3d rendering to work properly. When I try to run "gears" for example, it doesn't give any errors, will display the FPS, supports wireframe, etc, but will not display the gears (unless I have "wireframe" selected). Instead, I get a window that has a purple background, and no movement. When I try to run quake 3 demo, I don't get any errors, but the title screen animation "Quake 3 Arena" is completely missing. The game loads, but instead of playing properly, will just get "stuck" on a frame, and the only things that update, are the stats (i.e. ammo, health, etc). The game is running, as I can move around, shoot, fall, and be killed. I just can't see anything.

According the glxinfo, DRI is working properly. I have properly configured my XF86Config file, as I have gotten it to work succesfully in the past with the exact same conf. I think my problem lies in the kernel: the default slack8 install has a 2.4.5 kernel. 3d graphics work perfectly when I run this. However, I need to recompile in order to get SCSI emulation (cd burner) and OV511 usb camera support (that for some reason won't compile in 2.4.5). When I upgrade to 2.4.7, I get the symptoms described above, and when I try to completely recompile 2.4.5 (without ov511), I get the same (non-working) results. Any ideas?
