im going to get a new pair of headphones soon, probably the sony MD 700DJs, cause i saw my friend's pair, and they are sweet...anyway, im wondering if theres anything really a lot better out there thats actaually affordable (i.e. i dont think buying the 5.1 surround sound headphones is actually an affordable option)...but yeah, i guess my pricerange is probably as high as maybe 200-250...something around there....so whats good??

senheissers are always good for great 50/50 quality /value thats what i have now and man are they goooood

I have a pair of Sennheisers (HD 575, @ J&R) and they're fantastic. You won't go wrong with a Sony, but be fully aware that you're paying tons of extra money for the Sony name, not for anything special. (Sort of like Apple computers)

i have Sennheiser HD470s. I probably would not repeat ssaid purchase. Most sennheiser enthusiasts really hate these.. I dunno. Some music they sound really bad-ass at, other pieces of music it just.. flunks...I probably wouldn't recommend them. Posted by CatKnight on Mar. 26 2001,00:55
thats not always true, cr0bar! i have the sony v-6's, where are considered the BEST headphone under 贶 for only ๛. they are discontinued but you can still buy them. their new replacement model, the v-600, sucks ass though.edit:they are the best value because they don't require an amp, like all the high-end sennheisers do. you people are getting ripped off for your headphones man. I paid 25 bucks for mine and and and a friend compared mine with this 300 dollar "gold plated" somethingorother, and mine sounded just as good. Those sony ones that go behind your head are the shit. Awsome sound. Don't fall for any of those fake ones though, get the sony's.------------------ Sometimes you're the dog, sometimes you're the hydrant... Posted by CatKnight on Mar. 26 2001,14:13
you're an idiot. or you're mostly deaf. or your friend lied about how much his headphones cost. or your friend is an idiot and payed way to much for shitty headphones. one of the above must be true. and those sony "streey styles" aren't the shit, they ARE shit. they have horribly insensitive ferrite drivers, where any half-way decent headphone uses neodymium (mine use samarium cobolt magnets). granted there are some great sounding cheaper models (koss sporta-pro), but in general there is a BIG difference between crappy cheap headphones and good moderately expensive headphones.

If you want to buy decent headphones, take a track of music that covers a wide range of frequencies (i.e. bass but not constant bass, vocals, drums, acoustic & electric guitar etc.) and rip it off the CD to a .wav. Then, using a good encoder (i.e. not Xing) encode it at 128kbit/s, 160kbit/s, and 256kbit/s. Burn these three files back onto CD, and take it to the store. It helps to bring a decent CD player (i.e. no JVCs etc) for this part. Buy the headphones which sound fantastic at 256kbit/s, and allow you to hear the difference between 128kbit/s and 160kbit/s. If you can't hear the difference between the 128 and the 160 on any of the headphones, leave and keep using the ones that came with your CD player because you're fucking deaf and don't deserve or need new headphones.

what kind of headphones does that 'dude' thing have?maybe you should ask him.... my headphones cost me 5 bucks at radioshack. its got a 6 foot cord! you cant beat that! ------------------ Posted by CatKnight on Mar. 26 2001,20:57
Agreed cr0bar. Infact since I got my v-6's, all the (more rare) mp3's that I've downloaded at 128 sound like crap and I've had to hunt around looking for better quality ones. And if you can't tell the difference between high quality headphones and shitty ones, then don't bother buying any. Save your money for a hearing aide. Posted by Spydir Web on Mar. 26 2001,21:03
I really don't know what kind of headphones those were, but he got 'em from J&R I know that... don't matter though, he got mine taken by a teacher today... idiot was using them at lunch. I don't blame him though, I blame the teacher. We think the teacher took 'em cuz my friend is African American. no shit. One day I walked up to him at lunch with my cd player in hand and talked to him for 5 minutes, and he didn't do a damned thing. Then today he jacked my friend's cd player and my headphones... SOB... ------------------ Sometimes you're the dog, sometimes you're the hydrant... Posted by Sithiee on Mar. 26 2001,22:15
hmm...well i went with the 700 DJs, and oh wow are they nice. i ended up paying 130, and i could have gotten for like 15 dollars less...but its ok, because theyre so nice...and i know you all are gonna be like "130!?!?!?!? you stupid fuck, what are you smoking???" but well, fuck your mom.

I agree with what everyone is saying, more expensive is usually better. But I wasn't looking to spend 100 bucks on headphones, so I bought some Koss UR-30's. I don't listen to much music, I play games mostly (counterstrike), and they sound GREAT on my X-Gamer 5.1Happy hunting -miNus Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Mar. 27 2001,02:51

I got mine in Italy for บ, they really rock. They're some "off-brand", but they're Really good. Only hardcore "audiophiles" spend 贄 for a pair of headphones. I don't see the point...
Posted by DeadAnztac on Apr. 12 2001,20:39
Well if you don't see the point stick with those บ pair. I personally can't AFFORD uber-l337 headphones, so I got the UR-20's from KOSS, and they're good enough for MP3's. I can crank them pretty far without too much noticible distortion. (BTW, even on cassete player headphones I can tell the difference between 128 and 256 :-)

the koss ur series are one of the few good sounding cheap headphoens.sithiee, i should advise you (although it may be too late) that all of the new sony DJ series headphones sound like total crap compared to the older models which cost LESS. you should return them and get sony v-6's. they sound MUCH better. and aero, if you've never tried any high quality phones then i suggest you go out to a audio store and do so, just to prove yourself wrong. people buy stereo systems, so why not 贄's headphones for when you need privacy? Posted by Sithiee on Apr. 18 2001,08:39
mine sound nice, i like them, im keeping them :P
Posted by CatKnight on Apr. 21 2001,22:00
if you heard the older discontinued models, you would agree. they sound MUCH better. believe me!!
Posted by Sithiee on Apr. 21 2001,22:30
have you heard both?
Posted by DeadAnztac on Apr. 22 2001,01:20
Neither of you are right. I am. I say it's true that scrumptulecence is a word.
Posted by CatKnight on Apr. 22 2001,01:32
heheyes sithiee i have. i couldnt find the v-6's in stores so i bought the v-600's. they sounded decent, better then stock headphones of course, but after reading about 30 reviews saying that the v-6's were a whole lot better i returned the 600's and bought v-6's online. the bass is a LOT tighter and clearer, the midrange is fuller, and the highs are less annoying. Posted by Sithiee on Apr. 22 2001,01:42
but i dont have a v-6, i have a v700
Posted by CatKnight on Apr. 22 2001,04:46
the v-6's were replaced by the v-600DJ's. the v-700DJ's are not much better. the entire DJ series use sub-standard parts and are not nearly as good as the older models.
