How good is this game? I heard you can do shit like blow chunks out of all the walls and slow down the game just like how its done in 3Dmark2001. that sounds pretty cool, is it true?

Best single-player game I've played since Half-Life. The film noir storyline (and accompanying cutscenes/graphic novel) are very well done. Some might say overdone, but isn't that what film noir is all about?

The graphics are pretty amazing. When your character runs, his leather coat will flap and tug in just the right ways behind him. The matrix-style slow-motion dives and such really do make you feel like you're reliving the "lobby scene"--complete with coming out from behind a pillar in slow motion and capping guys and seeing wall and floor tiles crack and pop when you miss.

In fact, I think I'm going to go play some more right now.

< Max Payne fucking RULES >

I think that says it enough.

I don't think they should have made it multiplayer, actually. Theres too much to appreciate about it in single player that can't be replicated in a multiplayer game (Bullet time, for instance). As a single player game though, it's got all the essential elements. Graphics, story, humor, and gameplay.
I also liked the thinly disguised joke in the game about, hmm, a certain monopolizing software company. did anyone else catch it?

Plus, there's no way to implement Bullet Time in multiplayer. It just didn't work, no matter how GOD tried.

At least they got 1P right.

A bunch of friends and I played it...
It's worth trying, but I wouldn't buy it...
The coolest part is leaping during slow motion and yelling "noooo" really slowly...
The entire game is a good idea, but it needs to be further refined...like a bunch of other games...
(besides, wtf is 3drealsm doing releasing games other than DNF?)

EDIT: A few grammatical errors...

3drealms had very little to do with producing the game. it was made mainly by remedy. 3drealms just offered some consulting advice.

chmod-yeah i caught the monopoly joke. "aseir is now the biggest monopoly since mi*STATIC*ft."

I wish they would have implemented a lobby scene just like in the matrix though. I thought there was gonna be one when I first entered the lobby of the aseir building but then only 3 guys came out from the side and I owned them quickly. I'm sure someone will make a mod for it though.

i do believe that 3Drealms made the original Unreal. a very nice game. but it was like Doom. extremely-fucking-hard to beat if you didnt cheat. infact, i never did beat it without using the god mode code. and even then it wasnt worth it. lousy ending. a few lines of text, and a crappy escape. bleh.
im waiting for Unreal 2.

doom is actually very challenging to play without cheating. i used to own the snes version of it and it didnt have any cheats for it. christ it was hard cos u couldnt aceess all the levels without switching the difficulty to the one below knightmare (second hardest)

I thought it was gonna be like the lobby scene, too- They even had the metal detectors in the front (Would you please remove any metallic items, keys, loose change... HOLY SHIT!) like in the movie.

Apparently it's supposed to be relatively easy to make a mod for Max Payne. On the cd they give you some miscellaneous tools for editing maps, models and even particles (for gunsmoke and debris from explosions, etc.) Still over my head, though.

Very cool game.. one of the many I can now play because of winXP. I love slow motion jumping backwards while enemies run by you.. so damn fun.. or just like.. slow-moing time and watching the bullets come towards you and stepping out of the way. The sniper rifle is pretty cool too, not much of an advancement though. I'm pretty much passing the game with my double berettas.. matrix style.
Posted by CatKnight on Aug. 08 2001,13:26
marix style would be owning with dual ingrams, then switching to dual berattas to avoid having to reload. then whippin out the deagle if necessary
