My comp that's what!
I gots a new mouse last Fri. It's one of those Intellieye things. (I'm just a poor student so don't bug me about that!)

So I go to plug it in, and discover my comp is SO old and crusty it has a Serial port for the damn mouse. So now I have mouse>USB>PS/2>Serial>comp.

It no workies. I think it's cause the pins in the serial adapter aren't connecting.

I dunno, so i'm gonna go get a USB card, so i can plug in my new Zip Drive aswell.

I don't give a shit if that's not 1337 - i'm not rich! Any suggestions on making the mouse work?

yeah.. put it in a different machine..

but realistally.. a lot of times ps2 > serial adapters dont work unless they came with the mouse.. (i DONT know why?.. considering they should all do the same damn thing..)..
but i try and hold on to all tthat crap of mine.. incase i need it someday..

Oh, ho, ho, irony! Oh, no, no, we don't get that here. See, uh, people ski topless here while smoking dope, so irony's not really a high priority. We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was getting tired of being stared at.

if youre financially screwed, why not take it back and ask to trade it in for a different model of mouse? Definately cheaper than buying a USB card ... ?

Well there's no standard USB-serial adapter, as the two standards are not pin-compatible.. Most adapters of this type rely upon alerting the mouse hardware about the presence of the adapter, and the mouse hardware sends out different signals - as such, how the mouse hardware determines this, and which wires are mapped to which, are entirely up to the manufacturers discression.

That said, I find it likely that all microsoft mice are all using the same system (no need to devise the same technology twice, now, is there)

There are such things as USB to Serial Adapters out there, I personally wouldn't bother with any of them. In your case, going from USB -> PS/2 adaptor -> PS/2>Serial cable -> serial port obviously doesn't work here. As I recall, your computer had PCI slots. That's your way to USB - a USB PCI card.
