My girlfriend and I are going to Recon2000 seeing as its about a mile from my house. Shes going to use my machine and im building a new one. I want to know what everyone thinks would be the best gaming buildout. The whole setup is going into a 2u or if possible a 1u rack box.(which is going to be powder coated CHROME)My dual xeon server does play well and I can have every goddamn app I own open and not effect game performance. But the overall gaming performance of the machine is not what it could be. So what is every ones advice. Posted by kai on Feb. 24 2001,02:01
is this a money is no object type of thing?------------------ Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Feb. 24 2001,02:04
I would like to keep it under -, since I really am going to build one.

Sorry to say, but Xeons would be tottaly useless gaming wise. See they only run up to 833Mhz (I think) and those cost insanley more compared to a 833Mhz CuMine. Plus for gaming the large cache of the Xeons is pretty useless. So I would suggest getting like dual gig PIII's or better. Now for the rest that's simple Proc's - Dual PIII 1Gig+ And the rest are not such obvious choices. Ethernet card (netgear, intel, or 3com.) Case. DVD. CD burner. Etc. Etc. This is if you wanna spend good money and go dually if your not then that's a whole different MB and proc setup ~Anztac out. quote: With out a doubt, I will have a Geforce 3 but there really isnt that much time left. Feb is almost over and theres only 3 months left to the beginning of june. Theres no way Id want to jump into something like recon with out at least a months burn in and test time. It would not be good to show up with a problem like the 赨 Athlon 650 and motherboard that would not work with the newly released Geforce Pro that I had. A motherboard that puts out 10 watts per socket and a Video card that needs to draw 16 watts isnt very compatable.(usually I do like to "SEE" my video not just a black screen) So I need to get my ducks in a row. Your sig tells it all, hal0. Pentium 4? RDRAM?! You'd better check up on your dealer, that crack he's been selling you can't be good.

problem with that system is that it has an mx and doesn't have klipsch pro media------------------ Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Feb. 24 2001,18:36
I was thinking of running more like 2 gigs of mem or whatever the max is for the particular board i get. Plus I already have a badass hookup for hardware. I just gotta decide what i wanna get. I could probably get it for half price.

klipsches kick ass, my friend, no doubts about it. sure maybe a HT system would sound better, but duh. the promedias cost 趚 and sound better then most small HT setups up to about 躔 worth.

dude, the best speakers made for computers are the cambridge soundworks, theyre small, but very powerful. and theyre engineered to work well with sb live products.

quote: I paid 跌 for a Sony dolby digital setup that hands down sounds far better. Plus I have 300 watts in stereo and 550 in 5.1 digital. The only thing the klipsche hold above is size. I prefer it big anyway. It looks like a it sounds. I can knock pictures off the wall 2 houses down.(I live in a townhouse)

the only thing the soundworks have going for them is the 5.1 decoding... they are underpowered pieces of crap, especially for the cost. now comon, we need to know this sony system! thats the only thing keeping me from going out and buying the klipsch's right now, the fact that they're not 5.1. THIS IS TENSE! WHATS THE MODEL NUMBER?!?! ------------------ Posted by hal0 on Feb. 25 2001,05:08
if you have 5 grand (damn!) to spend on a computer, why don't you just buy one from alienware instead (www.alienware.com).. you can completely customize the systems, they look sweet, they have top of the line components, and they are in your price range.oh look.. i configured a system for you: < http://hal0.bastardize.net/detnet/system.jpg > ------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Feb. 25 2001,08:28
maybe theyve changed since i bought mine, i bought a 1000 5 point set for 100 2 years ago, and its pretty good for that much...of course that sony system for 300 does sound nicer...

go < here > for the system he's talking about.HT-DW620 踯.95 That's Sony suggested retail price. I believe these are 跌 at Best Buy. Don't pay more than 跌 bucks for one though, that's all they are worth. I own one. Yes, it'd be cool to use just for a computer speaker system, but don't use it for a home theater!!! I bought one of those, then upgraded to the HTD-DW820 which gives you DTS and a few S-Video Connections. That wasn't enough though. I needed more optical inputs, so I finally ended up with the STR-DE945. Which I'm very happy with. By the way. I'd be willing to sell my HT-DW620!!! I blew up 2 of the speakers, I'm using the center and the sub in my bedroom as extra speakers for the HTD-DW820. But I'll sell the receiver and 2 satellites!

crap, only a 50 watt subwoofer. for some reason the specs page wouldn't load... is it 550 watts rms? cause the klipschs are 400 watts rms with a 160 watt sub. hrm, how good is the sub... /me wants bass.------------------ Posted by Blain on Feb. 26 2001,00:06
I briefly had a very similar system (same speakers, better receiver) and it doesn’t sound bad. The main problem I found with it is that it doesn’t do midrange sound for crap. All the satellite put out nice treble, and the sub can put out some decent bass (especially for 50 watt), but only when you have the cutoff frequency set to about 50-60 HZ. As soon as you turn up the cutoff frequency the sub starts to wash out; leaving you with an ass-load of treble and no bass.------------------ Posted by CatKnight on Feb. 26 2001,01:08
the klipcshes are awesome. they rox0r in my dorm room. extremely punchy and clear bass.

quote: What the hell is that shit? My unit is a year to a year and a half old. Ill put the model number up when i get home. Its a WHOLE rack stereo. 5 disc carosel, tuner, amp, 2 tapedecks and dolby decoder. Needless to say it is BIG. |
