ok i have it installed and have everything working on it. everything being too much. i don't need alot of this shit. only thing is i don't know what all i need. i use it as a desktop and i don't run any servers from it. any idea on what serices i need to turn off and still be able to browse the network? security is my main issue. i don't want my shit wide open for the world to explore. maybe the ftp to be open after i configure it and also i will run a web server later (when the content comes up with its self)

any ideas?

Give me like a screenshot or a list or something of what services there are, and what's running and I can tell you what you probably don't need.

What are you doing running Advanced Server, boy? If you don't know what it does, and you're running it as a desktop OS... you just probably shouldn't. If you start installing crap on there, you can kiss your security and stability good bye. Plus, there's so much overhead going on that gaming will be neigh impossible.

If you have an older computer laying around, i'd suggest putting Adv Server on that for your tweaking and playing needs. Use it as a proxy server and you get your security, if not more. I can't think of why you would run a 񘮈 desktop OS. Sounds wasteful to me wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more, say no more

I wonder warez the place he got it. Ummm, yeah...

Anyways, I agree with AskHeaves. If you don't know what it is, I highly doubt you need to/should be running it.

first off, ASCIIMan, i can't say i don't have some warez (who here owns every piece of software on their comps?), but it isn't warez. its the public build 2xxx beta, all the service packs work and it updates so i have no problem with it being a beta.

second, you seem to doubt my computing skills. i'm not like oh my god what do i do, it's more like "if i turn this off will this stop working" and sure i could try it and see but knowing me i would turn everything off at once and never be able to get it working again, and its not a gaming machine (most of the time, 4:30 - 5:10 is another story), it is a working machine. when i get my home computer working again i will consider not putting ad server on it, but for work it seems to be just fine. i just don't want to leave my network open

i don't think i could go back to 98 after using 2k. maybe step down to 2k pro, but not 98.

in the windows realm I own all the software.... except win98se itself. I got that from my mom's work. They have one of those site licences though, so it's kinna legal... or something...

i have win2k advanced server installed as a second os, and i would have to say that is is very secure comparing to 98 or ME. i use it only for learning and sometimes to run an ftp server, but it is definately not recommended to use it for gaming. as for services, as soon as i tried to shut down too many of mine, it would give me a list of errors on startup and not much would work. but suit yourself. i would much rather go with win2k professional, and just make sure that u have netbios closed on your internet adapter, put up a firewall if u have too. but Win2k A.S. is really a bit too extreme for security.
