i was just wondering what exactly "kthx" means or stands for in hackers bastardizationi found it in this line: "stfu kthx, am hax0ring kthx!!" thanks Posted by solid on Jan. 25 2001,01:34
im guessing "shut the fuck up, k? thanks."

"kthx" is an abbreviation (notice two 'b's in 'abbreviate') for "k thanks", which itself is a shortened form of "okay, thanks".The literal difference between the meanings of "thx" and "kthx" is negligible, but "kthx" has a certain inflection which makes it more suitable for usage in certain circumstances. Exactly which ones is hard to explain. BTW, the sentence in question is not "shut the fuck up k? thanks." but rather "Shut the fuck up 'k thanks, am hax0ring, 'k thanks." Better said, however "short and snippy" is closer to what I was getting at than "bitchy, snotty". I don't really conceive of "kthx" as having a "bitchy" subtext to it. How about "short, snippy, and slightly fruity"?

it's not hard to explain. kthnx is used with a bitchy, snotty, mean tone of voice that is most often used when someone is trying to be dismissive.the nicer, more upbeat, sincere versions are usually along the lines of thx or ta, without a k in front of them. if someone actually says 'ok, thx' they probably really mean it. but if they say kthx, they're being short and snippy. it is just how it sounds, there's no space in between there, giving the impression that it's been said really quick and sharp. ------------------ Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 25 2001,18:48
okay.so how about n.b.? I see that on < the Register > from time to time. Posted by Rhydant on Jan. 25 2001,22:44

quote: My god, who would have thought n.b. could stand for all that? *FLEES* ------------------ Posted by kuru on Jan. 26 2001,01:28
ok, cr0, i've just always seen it used in context where it was short, snippy and had a 'you are dismissed now' kind of connotation to it.anyway, i wouldn't use kthnx if i really meant thank you. ------------------ Posted by cr0bar on Jan. 26 2001,03:16
Ack! You and ch1ckie spell it "kthnx". It's "kthx", dammit! :-)

UHHHHH Damien "n.b." isn't hax0rspeak. It's Latin abbreviation: n.b. stands for "Noto Bene", which means something along the lines of "make note of this" (that's a practical English translation)...it's like saying "etc." (Et Ceteras) or "e.g." (Exempli Gratias).------------------ This message has been edited by syf0n on January 27, 2001 at 08:36 AM Posted by kuru on Jan. 26 2001,15:00
kthnx or kthx, i wouldn't use either one unless i was being mean. i only spelled it that way cause that's how it was at the beginning of the thread.most of the time, i just say 'thanks' ------------------ This message has been edited by kuru on January 27, 2001 at 10:01 AM |
