I'm happy with Win98. I like it. It's comfy. Not too flashy, fairly quick (boots up amazingly quickly now that I have dual-boot with Linux. hrm.) I avoided WinME like the plague. Is XP worth it? Why is it better? Pros, cons? (For some of us 100$ is a lot of money. ) Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Dec. 03 2001,06:55
steal it.

Ahh, your post reminds me of the simpsons episode where Homer steals cable. "Nothing a month? Yeah, I think I can afford that." Personally, I tend to stick with my OS until it is in desperate need of changing. I just went to W2K about 3 months ago from NT4.0. I like my (Microsoft) OS to go through at least 2 service packs before I consider running it for my main system. The other reason I suggest putting off the upgrade is the, "will all my shit still work" factor. I know a few people with older systems that have had older devices not work in W2K and XP. If you're handy with the installs, it might be worth a shot. If you're going to do a fresh install, which is probably your best bet (I don't even know if there's an "upgrade" path from 98 to XP), remember that you have to go through the fun process of reinstalling all your applications, setting up various accounts, etc. Once again, that's why I wait until it has to be done. Call me lazy. I'd do something about it, but, it's easier not to. Posted by Wolfguard on Dec. 03 2001,10:27
you can upgrade 98 to XP.It will scan your hardware and tell you BEFORE it continues the install you my have problems and to find drivers. So far, every thing i have is running on XP. This includes things like office 97, paint shop pro, dreamweaver, Q3, and Diablo 2. the install is done right this time. You have to be there to answer the hardware question about drivers and to put in the serial number. After these 2 are done go watch tv for an hour. Seams to work best on 500Mhz and better machines with 128meg of memory or more. ------------------ Posted by miNus on Dec. 03 2001,11:20
As a general rule of thumb, I NEVER let the OS upgrade itself for me. It can only lead to problems in my experience.I ALWAYS(!!!!) do a fresh format before installing a new OS. Which reminds me... it's getting about that time again, ugh (Just because I do it doesn't mean I like it ) Oh, and I mean time to REINSTALL Win2K. None of this XP shit for me thankyouverymuch. Im not going to get it for a while. There is no real need to upgrade to it. I dont like the activation and Windows 2000 is working just fine. XP is just Windows 2000 with a different look and a little more stability.------------------ Posted by ic0n0 on Dec. 03 2001,12:44
IF you kill the weird themes xp is very similar to 2k, but my games are slower in xp.------------------ Posted by askheaves on Dec. 04 2001,13:20
Now that they've released the Rational Suites for 2002 and they work on XP, everything I use is XP except the servers. They way I look at it, a new MS OS is like a big service pack. I like it so far. It's pretty stable with just some weird quirks. I love being able to theme it. It boots quickly, and the multiple concurrent users is pretty sweet. The new media player is nice, even better than the hacked verson of 7->8. I don't know, just generally very nice. Also, I'm going to be putting XP on an old person's computer. It just seems more intuitive for them. Plus, it'll integrate very well with MSN, which is his ISP. He was running WinME before and it was crap. Blah Blah, I like WinXP. And there's already hotfixes going out all the time, so it's constantly being patched. Posted by pengu1nn on Dec. 04 2001,18:05
quote: no, its win2k for the dumb/blind/retarded. i've crashed xp more than 2k (3 weeks with xp, 7+ months win2k) i have also hard locked with xp, something i haven't been able to do in 2k. i do however think xp is better than 95/98/me, if you don't want to do the reg with microsoft thing, go buy ya a copy then dl a pirated one with that shit takin out. that way your still supportin bill gates, but not giving into the bullshit (hi, mircosoft, i need to get reregistared i just chnaged my hdd and my vid card, blah blah blah balh, crap) Posted by [liquid] meta on Dec. 05 2001,18:26
they sell copies of xp without activation...i also don't see what the problem is with activation... if you can sit there and take the time to put a new motherboard in, you can sit there for 5 minutes to get an activation key. Posted by pengu1nn on Dec. 06 2001,18:13

this n00b is running ME and you're all correct to avoid it.I'm avoiding XP 'cuz it's *possible* that I have unregistered software, and I hear you should watch out for the activation wizard. Am I correct? kbreak Posted by kornalldaway on Dec. 24 2001,04:52
no reason to watch out for anythingjust to be on a safe side once installed turn off automatic update and remote assistance, the go to update, get all the updates u need and maybe the patch for the PnP bug and u r all set if you are really worried about security turn xp firewall on i am not 100% sure about about activation wizzard because i never had it, i have one of those corporate release version that do not require activation as for XP sending some information to micrsoft during activation wizzard, even if that is true, you can always unplug modem (if u have high speed) and do the phone activation thing that way u avoid that problem as well Posted by ic0n0 on Dec. 24 2001,18:11
ive been dual booting between xp and 2k for about 3 months and i have no problems expect my mouse drivers. I have been going to xp more and more lately but win2k is stil faster.

I've got XP on all of my stuff. It's wonderful. I migrated form NT4.0 though, so I can't imagine it NOT being wonderful. Atleast it recognizes all my hardware

/me loves XP.whilst i've always advocated 98 for being fast, good for games and (if you can set it up as 1337 as i can) stable, XP 0wnz. it's pretty fast at starting, stable as a ROCK (STILL hasn't gone down on me), looks good, makes FAR better use of my 640mb RAM than 9x ever did, gives BETTER frames per second in some games, is more secure, networks better. it shields you from the heavy-duty crap i'm unlikely to ever use, but still lets you get to them relatively easily. moans: syndicate wars, theme park world, dungeon keeper 2. you'll be lucky. --directhex Posted by ic0n0 on Dec. 24 2001,21:50
