Well, here are the specs ipon which I have decided so far:
Not sure on the case
Athlon XP 1700 (maybe 1800/1900?)
EPoX 8KHA (maybe 8KHA+?)
512 mb DDR-SDRAM
Leadtek WinFast GeForce 3 TI 200
Use onboard sound
Pull cd burner, monitor, 75 gb hd, and mouse from old computer
Natural Keyboard (whatever brand...)
Comments?

If you're gonna get an 8KHA, you might as well get an 8KHA+ as it's the next generation chipset. Though, Via has been known to have *some* problems with new chipsets (that's why I chose the 8K7A AMD 761 board and it's great )

And I have to throw in a suggestion for monitor: Samsung 955DF. 19", flat glass, kick ass, cheap $$$

Thank you, I'll be here all night.

How much about is it to make a new compy? It's something I've been toying with, but is it worth it?

And then plug in your ษ, 5 watt, single paper cone pc speakers to reap the benefits of your awesome audio hardware.

I'm getting the monitor from this current computer, it's a 21" or something, I'm happy with it. This computer can be specced out for about 輪 w/ shipping from newegg.com if you get a cheap generic case, I'm getting a slightly nicer one though.

All I use anymore are headphones. I bought a cheapish set at Best Buy, the kind that completely surrounds your ear, they are awesome for gaming. I get so many people that say I cheat because I know when they're coming... in reality they are just really loud...

A good deal are the Cambridge Soundworks (marketed under Creative IIRC) 3 piece speaker system. It's around ุ and it's a subwoofer and two powered satellites. Awesome deal, I think they still sell them.

And I agree, a Live is all you really need. That and a good set of speakers/headphones.

Posted by ASCIIMan on Dec. 04 2001,11:39
Cambridge is crap. Live is overpriced. Yes I'm bitter.
Posted by TheTaxMan on Dec. 04 2001,11:42
It's all lies. Cambridge and Live! rule.

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like . . . ow . . . ound . . . round . . . ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?

And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence.

< Live!s are overpriced > (qualifier: unless you use some of the more complex realtime 3d sound effects).

From my experience, Cambridge sucks. This is taken from experience with my overpriced DTT2500 set which sounds like crap (which was at the top of their line when I bought it), and from a friend's lower priced FPS1000, which sounded like half a crap.

i would (am) get(ting) the audigy x-gamer (basicly the mp3 with better software ) i haven't heard a live or audigy so i can't really compare them but the audigy is able to handle 4 different "sound enviroments" at one time, all in the correct position (moving closer to you/away, to the right/left) and it is 24 bit which will make your cds and mp3s sound better.

i have a set of altec lansing atp3, and they are great except no headphone jack. all i hear is turn your speakers down, blah blah blah so i need a switch of some kind. the design on them is cool. 2 mini tweats at the top, and a down firing 3" mid on the bottom with a port that goes up the back side near the tweaters. and the sub is a 18 watt powered 6 1/2" downfiring "good?" paper woofer (i think it is paper, i was in an altered state when i took it apart, but i remember thinking it was good for what it was, and wondering if i could order another amp from them and add a better (car) woofer)

blah i'm off of work, and fixing to goto work so..... (2 jobs sucks ass)

I'm quite impressed and happy with Altec Lansing speakers and sub (older. ACS495). Don't remember how much they cost initially since I 'borrowed' from roomate who left and said "send the computer later" kind of deal.
Posted by schnarf on Dec. 05 2001,18:10
I still want to use onboard sound, if I find it suxtoobad, then I'll get the ม sb digital whatever crap card. I've got ACS495, I love 'em except for some minor issues they have with win2k, and I want them for this current computer. I'm probably getting some ฤ-ุ speakers by some company which I forget. I'm going with the 8kha+ now. Current specs: < http://schnarf.hn.org:81/neweggspecs4.htm >

lives drivers will fuck up your life! if you try and update them they will lock up your system until you rip your card out and reinstall the ones that came with it. then they will give you all sorts of shitty errors cos they get mixed up with the windows default drivers and then they just fuck with your head when you install them normally by not recognising the difference between win98 cd and the soundlive cd when it needs to build a driver database. and i had to install just the bog standard drivers as none of the config software for the card would install but just leave half of the program stuck on your drive somewhere. but i needed to upgrade from 98 to 98se so i still put up with all these faults.

Why the hell are you ordering from newegg? Their good for getting maybe one part but for ordering an entire system you get insanely ripped on shipping. In case you hadn't noticed, you have to pay shipping on each item you order. You'll end up paying almost another 贄 just for shipping. Look around a bit more, I bet you'll find a better deal.

Edit: oh and get your RAM direct from crucial.com cheaper, and free 2nd day shipping.

I prefer Mushkin. Cheaper RAM than Crucial on the low end, better RAM on the high end.
Posted by miNus on Dec. 08 2001,01:11
Oh so you have personal experience comparing both head-to-head ASCIIMan?

Crucial 256MB Unbuffered Non parity DDR - ๅ.09 + free 2nd day shipping
Mushkin 256MB Unbuffered None parity DDR - ๔ + ű 2nd day shipping

And I have read multiple comparative reviews that have said Crucial is more stable at higher speeds (and thus lower speeds), and faster, than either Mushkin or Corsair.

Though, the 512MB sticks are cheaper at Mushkin, but that's because Crucial just started offering them, I think.

Sorry, in the past when I've bought memory, Mushkin's prices on the low end have tended to be lower than Crucial's, although before I knew about Mushkin I always bought Crucial memory. I know that last time I bought memory (512MB registered DDR), Crucial didn't have the part I needed (at the time they didn't carry anything over 256MB for DDR). Anyways, I would say go with whichever one is cheaper for the same specs, because in my experience both companies make pretty good memory.
Posted by miNus on Dec. 08 2001,11:28
Yeah, they do both make good memory. To me, though, Mushkin and Corsair almost seem like 'designer' memory. Alot of people with the REALLY high end machines (and I'm not talking servers) use it, and they say it's the best. But then you have the people that don't go as extreme, but get the same overclockability out of Crucial, for alot less money (Crucial prices used to be CHEAP, they just had a price hike). The only thing was that Crucial hadn't done a 512MB stick of DDR until a week or two ago, I think.

Oh, and ASCII, sorry if I sounded like an asshole in my last post. To me it sounded like you were speaking from only viewpoint (ie having only used Mushkin) and I really hate when people make conjectures
My apologies.
