Has anyone here been able to get WindowsXP's built-in CDR drivers functional enough to burn a CD without failing, or melting the CD and ejecting the remainder at a high rate of speed?

I've heard it doesn't close CDs. I just "got" my copy of EZCD 5.1, or 5.2, or whatever the other day and need to try it out this weekend. I'll let you know if I have good results. 4.0 dies on boot.

no, it doesn't close it. but the files are still readable in different computers as "read-only" i've only checked this on win 2000 machines. it may not be openable on lower.

By not closing the CD, I'm guessing that it's defaulting to making multisession CDs. Where if you don't have enough to fill a CD now, you can add more later in another session. Older drives had problems reading multisession CDs, and making multiple sessions really wastes space on the disc.

Though on the subject of Read-Only files, I noticed that in XP they finally fixed the problem with copying files from a CD. In previous versions of Windows, it would keep the Read-Only flag on, then you would have to go back through and clear it for all the files you copied.

I'll still stick with Nero.

not if you're opening a CD-rw inside a CD-rw drive on a non xp system. if it's an rw you should still beable to save to it (i've decided that the type of disk doesn't matter, i've been able to rewrite (not that great but still) to a cd-r on xp)

That's only if you're using software like Nero's InCD, which uses UDF packet-writing to allow you to use the disc like a floppy. Otherwise the system simply sees the disc as a normal CD.

Um...if it's on a CD, shouldn't they be "read-only" by definition? I mean, it is a CD after all.
