Well earlier today, I had my case open, since I just finished putting in a new hard drive. I could hear that the crappy fan in there was making lots of noise and being annoying. By chance, I had a CPU load monitor up on the screen and I started to notice that whenever I did anything that forced up the processor usage, the pitch of the vibrations of the fan changed.... The only explanation I could come up with that seemed valid was that the processor was sucking slightly more power thus reducing the current to the fan motor.So my query is thus: Does my theory seem accurate? Ok this is an easy one.Powersupply == 220w System power draw ==230w Thats not good. Get a bigger powersupply or unhook some periferals and see if it stops. If you run you fans at low voltage itll burn up in a hurry and leave you with a big plastic insulator on your heatsink, not to mention the bad things that can happen if drives dont spin all the way up. Just maybe you may have onboard fan controls too.. I know some mobo's have fan controls and can change the fan rpm's by according to the system load.... but thats a long shot. Posted by SLATE on Nov. 17 2001,07:45

Also, and this is a fairly simplistic suggestion (but I did have a similar problem once), it may be that your fan is just bogging. Try putting a drop of WD-40 into the bearings. Most fans have a screw hole that allows lube to get into the bearings just under the label.------------------ |
