Just a quick question... isn't the cable between the modem and the phone socket on the wall the same for all modems? It seems however that the cable for my external modem doesn't work on my friends internal modem. It just doesn't get the dial tone. What's up with this bad boy??------------------ Posted by ASCIIMan on Nov. 11 2001,21:04
Your computer is defective. Take it back to the store immediately because it could explode at any minute. Not really. All phone cables should be the same (except for PC Card modem dongles). I suspect you've plugged the cable into the phone pass-through jack instead of the line jack. code:The symbols (should be next to the jacks engraved in the back of the card): This message has been edited by ASCIIMan on November 12, 2001 at 04:10 PM Posted by MeatJam on Nov. 11 2001,21:09
Aha. Your suspicions are incorrect. The external and internal modem lack pass-through jacks. I may be wrong, but I think European modems don't have them. I think I read that somewhere, due to some stupid regulation. Anyway what's a PC Card modem dongle. It sounds dirty. I have a dirty modem.

The modem is defective?edit - Here's a dongle:
edit 2 - Actually, the modem probably isn't defective, but might be installed incorrectly/not installed at all. Try uninstalling the drivers (if there are any), restarting, removing the modem, restarting, and reinstalling the modem. BTW, do any other phone cables work? Oooooh so that's a dongle. I was mighty confused so I looked into it (only a little. I'm tired). Are dongles for them tiny cards you put into laptops then? I guess so.
<edit> aha you cunning swine! You changed the picture to a big one making it obvious its for laptops. Now i look foolish. Oh well.</edit>

dongle just means a proprietary thing to be plugged into your comp, in the pcmcia modem's case a special cable. back in the day there was even game copy protections that required dongle's to be plugged into the computer to play.

i have never heard before of internal and external modem cables being differentmy guess would be that u got a defectie moded, or something else. sometimes, if your modem isn't set up correctly and it can't detect it, instead of giving u a decent and comprehensible error message it just says "no dial tone". then again, might have something to do with where u r at. in some countries u need adaptors for different phone jacks, that could cause problems. and sometimes there just isn't a dialtone. first thing to do will be try switching modems with your friend and see if it will work that way. if his modem will work on your computer, and yours won't work on his then your modem is defective. and just to be on a safe side, check inside the jack on your modem if the two wires are nice and straight and are sticking up a bit. it might just be lacking contact in there Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Nov. 12 2001,10:12
unplug the line and plug it back in that usually works for me. ------------------ Posted by beuges on Nov. 12 2001,14:08
well, i got a cheapo internal modem that isnt approved by the phone company or supported by any of the isps... if i set it up to wait for dial tone before dialing, it never finds the dial tone, so i just say don't wait for a dial tone. one way to check if its the phone cord instead of the modem is to plug your fone into that cable, and check if you get a dial tone. if you do, then just tell winbloze not to wait for a dial tone, and put a few comma's (,) before the number you want to dial in the settings box. the commas represent a pause in the dialing-beuges Posted by MeatJam on Nov. 12 2001,14:42
Beuges, your fresh logical thinking.. er.. refreshes me. I'll get on the case next time I'm round my friends house. Suppose I got so many ppl involved on this meaningless thread I might aswell report whether I get it to work or not, and what fixed it in the end.Of course that assumes I ever get it to work. Hmmmm. ------------------ Posted by [liquid] meta on Nov. 13 2001,12:18
that's a brilliant idea....tell it to not wait for dialtone but have it pause in dialing. what if it's a smart modem that only picks up numbers though? or are we just talking piece of shit modems?

I havent had an internal modem since about 1996, wow time sure does fly. Do they even make them anymore?? ------------------ Posted by MeatJam on Nov. 13 2001,13:11
I'm afraid so. It's truly depressing. Hmmm I don't think it's a smart modem though. It doesn't seem to hone in on enemy aircraft at all.------------------ Posted by beuges on Nov. 13 2001,16:04
