Ok, so I know this whole DSL thing works in my house now (ask the people using Morpheous. I don't think I've ever downloaded that much crap in my life). BUTTT, I got a couple difficulties. One, can someone name a "cheap", reliable DSL modem, that DOES NOT use USB (damn this alcatel thing!), possible give linkage to it, and maybe name a major chain like CompUSA or Circuit City that might carry it? I want/need to get my linux box on the 'net, with out having to run through my windows box. Nothing that's out of the price range of a unemployeed 15 year old, with a little support from cheap parents who know jack diddly about computers. I told my dad I'd need to upgrade to windows NT/2k and buy some software to get my windows box setup as a router, which is BS I know, but hey, if it gets me a damned NIC based DSL modem, fine by me. Second, I know it's been done but I got no bloody idea how. Where can I find a redirect site that I can get so someone could maybe telnet to spydirweb.some-redirector.com, without having a static IP? I'm really looking for something so that if I get disconnected I can just reconnect and not have to update the DNS thing with a new IP. I remember seeing a few places that do that but I can't remember what they were using or how... also, the idea of it being free is a good addon. A little more off what all that was about, but would ECC enabled memory be better set in a linux box, which I use most the time and also acts as a small server, or a windows box which I mostly only use to play mp3's and games? As memory prices go down I'm go pick up a few DIMM's and I already have a 128MB DIMM of ECC in one box, I figure I'll pick up another and put it where ever it can be used best. Thanks in advance if you can help me out with any of these! ------------------ Posted by kornalldaway on Jun. 23 2001,23:37
there is a service at a site < www.hn.org > it allows a dns adress for dynamic ips, it is free, and u can find there software that will automatically update your ip on the their dns server when u start your computer. i used it to run my hotline server for a while, but then i realized that tohugh i do have a dynamic ip, they still never change it. hope that helps ------------------ Posted by cr0bar on Jun. 24 2001,00:31
ECC memory in your case is pretty much a waste of money.
