Go with the athlon, definitely.

For a start, it'll faster than the P4 under most circumstances ( i hear a 1.3GHz athlon is about comparable to a 1.7GHz pentium 4. )

Also, the RDRam that the P4 needs is eggregiously expensive (just looking at a stockists web page now, £411 for a 256mb stick of RDram vs £48 for 256mb PC133? Think i'll pass) while not providing that much more performance in real-world tasks over SDRam.

The athlon system also has a bigger hard disk and more ram. I'd definitely go for system b.

swap the pentium for a lower one and go with a migger graphics card that way you'll actually be getting the most out of the system

Definitely the Athlon ... but how much are you paying for this? I can probably beat that price by about 15-20\%.

Umm ... I'd consider:

1/2-gig of PC2100 DDR
40GB 7200rpm (I fux0r3d the first post)
Radeon DDR

better than

256MB of PC133
60GB 7200rpm
TNT2

but to each their own.
