Topic: DDR - worth it?

OK, I'm just considering options for my new system - is DDR ram really going to make enough difference to justify the added $$$ for RAM & mobo? Or is it more of a "bigger dick" thing?

My primary use of this machine is gonna be GAMES. Will the DDR give me a substantial edge, or should I save the extra bread and buy that 21" monitor?

I'm planning to slap a 1.0 or 1.2 GHz TBird (266 FSB) and a gF2 Pro into this, just in case that makes a difference in the DDR performance ... I don't think that a 1.0 could take advantage of the DDR well enough.

Opinions?

In the most non-technical sense, I think that DDR isnt worth it. its a lot of extra cheese and i heard its not even going to be supported in a few years.... Or maybe im thinking of something else..
sorry, if I'm wrong.

What are you comparing the cost of?

If you already have a lot of SDRAM that you're thinking of putting in to your new system, then use that and save yourself some $$$.

If you have to get new memory for the system, then shell out the extra $$$ and get a DDR SDRAM system. DDR SDRAM isn't all that much more than SDRAM. Applications that have good 3DNow! optimization will show a pretty good performance increase. Insist on the AMD 760 chipset. The Via and ALi chipsets are a lot slower, and you won't save much $$$ by using them.

Side note : I've been playing around with MMX / SSE / 3DNow! instructions lately. On the Pentium IIs and IIIs, shuffling data around with MMX is no faster than using normal instructions. Using SSE cache prefetch gives you a tiny performance increase (about 3\%). On the Athlon, proper use of the 3DNow! cache prefetch instructions along with MMX results in 20-25\% more bandwidth

I'm comparing the cost of new PC133 to new PC2100 DDR. Currently I can get 256MB DDR or 512MB PC133 for the same price... I'm tempted to get a gig.

In that case, the memory is most likely crap.

It won't be Windows' fault when your system mysteriously crashes every hour or so.

Shit, you guys are lucky with the prices of stuff over there. Here in NZ -

512MB SDRAM (pc-133) 踈
256MB DDR RAM (pc-2100) 赜
(these are some of the cheaper prices)

and -
MSI GeForce3 64MB/DDR/TV-out & Video-in 逘

DAMMN!! In today's ads in the paper, I saw a 128MB pc133 for 25 bucks... One of the few good things about the US, I guess.

It wouldn't surprise me. I've decided to go DDR after all; I think I'll appreciate the extra bandwidth.

Mmm ... 512MB Micron DDR (2x256MB) = ๲ USD.

Now, time to sell off my old parts. Anyone want:

Celeron II 566@850
ABit BH6
128MB PC133 @ CAS2

?

Posted by The_Stomper on Jun. 24 2001,18:41
Heh ... I can get obscene amounts for it locally - prices here are still a damned lot more than wholesale.

But for you ... ฤ (USD). Shippin' included. (Come on, how much can a stick of RAM weigh?)

By popular request:

< Micron 256MB PC2100 DDR - แ >

That's lifetime guaranteed, non-ECC Micron RAM there, and shipping is ~Ű (at cheapest).

I don't have any of my other crap up on eBay yet. I can probably find a buyer for them in town, but if I can't then to eBay they go.

Sithiee - I'm gonna have to wait to sell you the RAM until I've got my new parts, since that 128MB is all the RAM I got. Running w/o a computer simply isn't an option.

ummm
I'll buy all 3 from you...
I need to build my mother a system....

Any deal?

Posted by The_Stomper on Jun. 25 2001,14:04
Well, Sithiee did speak first on the RAM; but the motherboard and CPU I will definitely sell. If Sithiee decides not to buy from me then I'll sell you the whole package for 贶 plus shipping (insured UPS ground).

That's:

Celeron 566@850 (guaranteed by BigFoot Computers to run at 850)
FCPGA -> Slot1 adaptor
Golden Orb attached to CPU with Arctic Silver
ABit BH6 - supports any 100MHz FSB Coppermine
128MB PC133 CAS2

Whaddya think?

Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 26 2001,01:46
no no, i want that ram! besides, ill give slate my old comps ram (192mb) if he just pays shipping, but it only runs at pc100, assuming he uses it to make that shitty server of his run faster, what a piece of crap.

Hmm... sounds like a deal could be created here.

Stomper -> Sithiee = 128MB PC133
Sithiee -> Stomper = ฤ USD
Stomper -> SLATE = Celeron II 850, BH6, Golden Orb, FCPGA-to-Slot1
SLATE -> Stomper = 贝 USD

How's this sound, all?

Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 27 2001,02:07
sounds good
Posted by The_Stomper on Jun. 27 2001,15:45
SLATE? Speak up, man - I've got an interested local buyer, and if you don't let me know soon I'm gonna hafta sell to him.
Posted by The_Stomper on Jun. 27 2001,16:35
For no particular reason:

< 256MB PC2100 CAS2 DDR > = ฿.00 = 0wnage!

Looks like two of these are gonna find a good home in my FIC AD11.

Posted by kai on Jun. 29 2001,03:57
hey SLATE um i've been talking to The_Stomper and if you're not going to buy his mobo/proc then i am. So um speak up if you want it

Two words - < FIC AD11 >

This board contains large quantities of 0wnage. I suggest you buy one - if you're looking to build a new system I can show you a nice barebones deal.
