Has anyone done this successfully? I've got XP installed right now and want to install 2k over it to dual boot it.. but things aren't working so great since the setup cannot run on an operating system that is newer then itself. Any suggestions other than uninstalling xp installing 2k and then installing xp?

yes
boot to dos and start installation of 2k from the cd
on the subject of dualbooting i strongly recomment using different partitions for each OS
they should theoretically run from the same partition, but you can be running into a lot of problems

I think I'll go with the backup, format start a new.. I've got enough temporary files I don't know about on my HDD to fill the grand canyon of data.. hmm.. damn that was lame.

No. BAD kornalldaway. Never, EVER run two OSes off the same partition. It's less painful to strip buck-naked and run backwards through a cornfield than to try pulling that shit off.

Make another partition with PartitionMagic or a similar utility. Or backup, format, and start a new.
