everytime i try to install redhat and win2k on the same machine redhat ends up stealing the boot sector so that i can't boot into windows anymore. anyway to fix this without resorting to a boot disk?

< Tweak3D > has a section on getting Win98, Win2K and Mandrake 7.0 to play nice by circumventing LILO ... I don't know if it'll work for DeadRat but give it a shot.

i am using LILO, but after installing, it doesn't show win2k, only linux i tried installing LILO to the MBR and to the first sector of the linux HD but same thing happens. i dont want to have to use a boot disk

have you even attempted to read the lilo manual?

do this for me, before you look like more of an idiot. type "man lilo" at a console and hit enter. READ IT. Edit your /etc/lilo.conf. When you're finished with that, RTFM a few more times.

what a punk

well, come on now. When lilo's fucking up, it's either the config file (/etc/lilo.conf) or the install is screwed, in which case you just find a lilo rpm (or whatever distro you run) and rpm -U lilo-<version>.rpm.

spydir is being a punk, but he IS right.

pull up the lilo.conf manpage, edit your /etc/lilo.conf file appropriately, run lilo with no options, and reboot.

sorry, I can't help it. I'm used to venting extreme sarcasm on my friends from school, but we're out so I have no one to vent on but people I don't know.

I'll try to watch myself. Otherwise, someone tell me the number for that asshole old guy on the radio who keeps talking about how "kids today are to full of their computers and have no respect for ..." blah-dee-blah-blah. I think he said some about our elders after that, but I don't think he deserves my respect enough to pay attention...

other option is, if you've got linux and win2k on separate hard drives, toss lilo altogether, and when u want to boot to linux, just change your boot device in setup. simplest option i think
Posted by CatKnight on Jun. 07 2001,16:29
well i tried editing the lilo.conf file but when i booted up the boot manager didn't reflect the changes i made. is there a script i have to run to update it after i edit it?

edit the file, save it, and run "/sbin/lilo" right after. If it errors, it means you did something wrong (it gets annoying if you've been up all day fucking around attempting to install a new kernel, trust me). If not, it just lists the OS's it'll use. If it still messes up, try updating your version of lilo, or just completely reinstall the version you have right now. I remember when I installed slackware the version my install cd was royally FUBAR and lilo fucked up everytime.

FUCK MANDRAKE AND FUCK REDHAT.

Slackware is the way to go!

if you're feeling unusally elite, download the kernel and some utils and make your own distro I suggest you start with syslinux to get an operable system started.
