What kind of graphics card do you have? Looks like some kind of video artifact, maybe. Try swapping out another graphics card if you have one.
Posted by Observer on Sep. 29 2001,12:49
What happens when you mouse over it or click on it? Looks like it might be a hotspot for the screensaver or something.

Umm.. nevermind, I thought you were talking about the distortion next to My Computer. I have no freaking idea what that dot is...
Posted by CatKnight on Sep. 29 2001,14:47
ok i think it's related to internet explorer. when i open internet explorer, the dot appears (if i minimize ie). it dissappears if i close ie and then run another program that covers up that spot. wtf...(btw i have zone alaram running, although i don't know how it could help because it lets anything that internet explorer (or other programs on its list) do.)
Posted by askheaves on Sep. 29 2001,20:04
What version of IE do you have? it is IE6 beta? the beta had a little bug where if you put your mouse over the desktop with a jpeg on it, it would bring up the 'save, print, send, open' toolbar in the corner. It could be related to that.
Posted by CatKnight on Oct. 02 2001,22:26
its ie 5.5 and it is not related to that little window in any way.

i think it has something to do with kazaa now, im still investigating.

Posted by veilside on Oct. 02 2001,22:50
yeah, i was about to say. i was giving kazaa the raised eyebrow when i saw that little shit in the corner.. crafty bastards, wtf does it do?!!?
Posted by psychopharmacologist on Oct. 02 2001,23:51
I have the exact same thing.
And i dont have Kazaa.
I really dont know what it is, it looks like a really small window.
I've got a TNT2 card in my box, but i dont think it has anything to do w/it.
Posted by chmod on Oct. 03 2001,00:18
yeah man, it's kazaa... i've noticed this before. Actually, right now my "dot" is more of a "bar" and it's apparently just the top bar of a window. i got a screenshot so you can see what i mean. i'll post it later.

i think a small dot is a small scrifice for all the free pr0n u could ever want

Try clicking on it and then pressing Alt-F4.

You seem to be running either XP or 2K. Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if you can end the task (or process, it's probably not a task).

if some of you say it's caused by kazza could it be related to spyware in some way?
the info somehow said Client0, could be a spyware client minimized. it's just a guess though
Posted by just_dave on Oct. 06 2001,19:55
im getting the dot too... but it comes and goes...

After a quick search on google, it appears that Kazaa automagically installs Webhancer after asking if you want to install Webhancer (in other words, it installs it if you tell it to, and it installs it if you tell it not to).

< More info here. >

Posted by psychopharmacologist on Oct. 06 2001,21:33
Audiogalaxy install webhancer too.
i doubt thats it, since i uninstalled all that shit.
Although.... could be related to audiogalaxy or kazzaa, perhaps they install something else in addtion to webhancer.

Is that where the damn prog came from? And I thought it was important...stfu RAM sucking piece of trash...

Posted by ASCIIMan on Oct. 07 2001,02:21
Supposedly when you uninstall Kazaa, Audiogalaxy, etc., Webhancer is not necessarily uninstalled, or if the program says it has been, was not "properly" uninstalled (ie the program still runs, soes everything, the only thing that changed is any reference to it in the add/remove programs dialog)...

If this is the case, the only way to get rid of it is to download Webhancer itself (ie the version that doesn't come bundled with anything), install it, and then uninstall it, which should properly restore the system files it replaces on your computer.

Ok, i managed to drag that thing out to the middle of the screen: < http://www.geocities.com/straymonolith/storage/dot.html >

and I analyzed it using the tool that comes with visual studio spyxx.exe and got these stats: < http://www.geocities.com/straymonolith/storage/spy.html >

but damned if i know what to do with this info.

edit: stupid geocities wont let me link directly to pics, so i have to make little html files.

incubus is RIGHT on this one. That's a minimized mIRC client (if it's the same lame piece of shit that tried to latch onto me) and it's serving your drive root.

Do yourself a favour and find out what the program itself is - search for rundIl.exe (not rundll.exe) in your registry and see what kind of nasty shiznat pops up.

Posted by Observer on Oct. 08 2001,13:08
Since the uppercase i and lowercase L look the same in this font, I'll clarify for those who missed his point:
code:
rundIl.exe

Doh. Forgot that my font isn't the same as the DetNet one. Oh well - Observer made the point I was trying to. Thanks.
Posted by psychopharmacologist on Oct. 09 2001,01:44
Not finding anything for rundil.exe

But search for TimeSink Ad Client, that may be it. I'm not sure where it came from but it launches on startup, check msconfig.

You didn't read my post. You used a lowercase i instead of an uppercase one in your search. That's the whole trick, the fact that an uppercase i and lowercase L look the same. Try searching again, and copy/paste the filename from my above post.

Except Windows (9x, and NT in non-posix mode) is case-insensitive. Even in searches.

I have that dot as well. XP RC1 with Kazza installed (the leading suspect). Geforce2 Pro is the current video card.
WTF is it! Make it go away ...unless I must give up access to pr0n via Kazza, then I can live with it.

Posted by pengu1nn on Oct. 13 2001,03:09
do you have active desktop on? maybe?
i have kazaa and i dont have that shit
Posted by Rhydant on Oct. 14 2001,01:45
it doesnt say webhancer is installed.
then again, it IS spy-ware... so why would the program tell the computer its there? kinda defeats the purpose....

heheheh, yeah. i know, i know. just fooling around.

but seriously. is Kazaa good or bad?

I just noticed this. It wasn't there when I first installed kazaa (I chose not to install the adware, obviously).

It won't let me uninstall it because it says:

bullshit.

Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Webhancer, Remove. No trouble at all...nothing changes, Audiogalaxy and Morpheus will still work.
