Well, I've decided to dip my toe into some Linux. I'm using < PhatLinux > - and I've got to say, my first experience has SUCKED. X11 will NOT recognize my geForce2 GTS (it claims the card has 64KB of video ram) and won't run at anything higher than 640x480x8bpp. I've tried getting drivers, but the things don't seem to work (it says it needs XFree 4.0 or better, and PhatLinux apparently doesn't have it.) What the hell do I have to do to get XFree and my GTS working together?

(Edit - fucking UBB code.)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Try Mandrake.

I've never used phatlinux, but that's because 100\% of people that I know who have used it said it sucked. Try switching distros for one with a newer version of X (x 4.1.0 was just released, but most distros will probably have 4.0.1 or newer). SuSE, Red Hat (go for version 7.1, stay away from 7), Mandrake 8, and a few others have XF86 4.x. If you're looking for something to specifically boot out of windows, I know slackware comes with loadlin, and I remember reading Mandrake has something that can kinna-sorta do all that (although I can't remember exactly).

Otherwise, you can try upgrading X to a 4 series, but every time I do a source/binary upgrade I fuck up pretty bad, so don't ask me about that.

Hey, I did say I was "dipping my toe" in Linux. I'm still a "Linux Lam0r" - so I'm looking for something I can run outta Windows. I think I'll try Slackware like Spydir suggested.

Mother fucker! Is Slackware ever huge - if I'm gonna hit 3 CDs worth of downloads, I might as well get Mandrake or RedHat.

go redhat.. its newbie friendly...
And dont EVER EVER EVER EVER USE ANYTHING CALLED PHAT!
Posted by Spydir on Jun. 04 2001,00:14
... I got slackware 7.1 on a one CD...

anyways, you're better off with mandrake. It's much more newbie friendly.

and if it's "Phat Booty Maker" for chicks, then it's ok to use something named Phat.

You only need the install cd, source and contrib are extras.

OK, I've been doing some research. Here's what I've come up with/plan to run:

- Mandrake 8 or RedHat 7.1 (opinions please?)
- XFree86, latest release (4.1.0?)
- KDE 2.0

Upon further research into PhatLinux (and several hours of fucking around) I've decided it sucks ass. It's basically Mandrake 7.x, XFree86 3.3, KDE, and just enough proprietary code added to totally fuck up any patches/XFree updates that you attempt to install. So much for "don't judge a book by its cover."

go with Mandrake. It's Red Hat and then some, and quite easy on a newbie.

And stick with KDE 2. It's purdee Case in < point >

thats what i said!

I used to be addicted to IceWM and GNOME, but I switched to KDE2 for a weekend and I've been to lazy to switch back (all that ln -s'ing is a waste... of... grubbing time!).

Don't matter. As long as I can have a sexy women in the background of my x-chat and my wallpaper, I'm happy with most anything.

Thanks... I still got plenty of kinks to work out though. No sound yet, my wheel on the mouse isn't working right, and I swear it's running off software acceleration. Even this text is typing slowly. Any ideas? I did a fresh install of the nVidia RPMs for Mandrake 8.0... maybe I'll try the tarballs.

Turns out it is running off software rendering. GLX isn't even loaded as an extension - I've got 'driver="nvidia"' line and 'Load "glx"' in my modules area of XF86Config-4. Still no clue on the sound though - hell, even PhatLinux recognized my SB16. Maybe there's a console tool for that (does Mandrake 8 come with Kudzu?)

try running Lothar. I ran mandrake 7.0 for a long time and I'm pretty sure they still got Lothar in there.

Fixed the GLX - it's DEFINITELY hardware now. Damn, Q3A kicks ass under Linux .... except still no sound or mouse wheel. One problem down, 2 to go. Maybe I'll just buy an SB Live, I need a new card anyways (lousy SB16)

Anyone know how to manually assign IRQs? My geForce2 has decided to sit on IRQ5, and I want it on IRQ10. I've tried "HardDrake" from Mandrake's library, but I can't seem to find "set configuration manually" or the equivalent.
