BRUE RIGHTS!BRUE HAROGEN RIGHTS ARE DA BEST! VELLY BLIGHT!! Posted by MattimeoZ80 on Sep. 25 2001,05:50
The blue lights on my keyboard are distracting me from the monitor, and whenever i look at them and start to stare, it hurts my eyes. And here I thought this would be cool!

If I stop looking at my palm, comp, tv, generally anything without pixels, my eyes start to hurt. I wonder what that means..."That the Matrix cannot tell you who you are" Posted by Beldurin on Sep. 26 2001,15:41
Last summer I spent about 7 hrs/day sitting in front of a comp programming PHP for a corporate intranet. About 2:00 every day my eyes would just give up and refuse to focus on the screen. If I concentrated I could see the screen for about 15 seconds, then fuzz out again. Perhaps programming isn't my calling?------------------ quote: Never argue with and idiot...he may be doing the same thing Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Sep. 26 2001,18:17
It probably means the refresh rate on your monitor was too low, or your monitor just sux0red in general. Next time, demand a digital flat panel. You probably also made the typical mistake of intermediate hax0rs - "intermediate" in terms of how many years you've been computing, not your technical ability. Those of us who've been doing it for many years (17 for me - I started when I was 10) learn that the best practice for coders and other hardcore computer users is to say "fuck what it looks like, 90\% of being productive is using your tools properly anyway" and take *many* short breaks. I try to work 15 minutes on the computer, followed by 5-15 minutes off, repeat until my day is done. This gives me plenty of time to rest my eyes, stretch my hands, do some paperwork, go to the bathroom, and most importantly zone out and give my neurons a little rest. When I finally gave up trying to be a hardcore code-until-you-drop guy, and forced myself to Ctrl-C every 15 minutes or so, I found my code got insanely better - I was spending less than half as much time coding, yet I was actually getting things done faster. The amount of time I spent debugging dropped to about a tenth of what I was doing before. It took me awhile to figure out why that happened, but finally it dawned on me that I was commenting the shit out of everything so that I wouldn't be lost when I went back to writing - and when I was staring at the ceiling twiddling my thumbs, I'd really start thinking about my code's structure rather than the details. Hope this helps you in your quest to become l33t among the l33t... Posted by spOon on Sep. 26 2001,19:04
Well like I said I don't have any visual probs, but you might want to try putting on sun glasses or just closing your eyes for 5 min. After about 3 years of hourly programing you should be able to withstand anything.

I don't know if it helps any, but, its a proven fact that a dark background with lighter text is MUCH less strain on your eyes. Two years ago (I call it the summer of IRC) I stayed on the computer 14 hours a day for weeks at a time, and never had any eye problems, because my client was black background, green/red text. I don't know anything about various programming interfaces, but maybe you could change the schemes? Just a thought.------------------ quote: This message has been edited by caseman984 on September 27, 2001 at 02:18 PM Posted by miNus on Sep. 26 2001,20:24
OMG caseman, and I thought I was bad!

good call, caseman. Yellow text on a black background == happy eyeballs

I can tell you for a fact that BRIGHT FUCKING WHITE ON MILDISH DARK RED AND BLACK hurts the eyes. I don't know who would ever use that color scheme though. On a sidenote, I've found (though I don't always follow) that when you take breaks, they have to be AWAY from the computer. That's why I was a much better programmer when I smoked at work or in computer lab. My body and addiction would force me to stand up every hour or so and just veg for 6 minutes. Even though I was just some punk college sophomore, I was doing better than most. On colors, I just this minute changed the background on my VisStudio.NET forms from BRIGHT FUCKING WHITE to a subdued bluish-gray color. My eyes are thanking me as we speak. Maybe try moving back from the screen.------------------ Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Oct. 03 2001,05:03
quite right, askheaves. I take a smoke break every hour or so, and my secret smoking spot has a *marvelous* view of the SF Bay... on most days I can see The City and the Golden Gate Bridge on the other side. Some days they're shrouded in fog. Either way, that view always takes my mind off computing entirely. And when I go back to the ol' cubicle, I've usually solved whatever problem I was having before, without even thinking about it

i always turn my brightness down on my monitor as low as i can get it whilst still being able to look at whats on the screen. plus i use dark colours for my backgrounds as well. less light means less nuk0r3d optic nerve------------------ Posted by Nikita on Oct. 03 2001,16:22
no no no, when things get fuzzy, you kinda have to look at it like those annoying 3D cross-your-eyes-til-they-cramp picture books ...

My keyboard has pretty blue lights too!

The bright white on black makes your eyes twitch and refocus a bit. That's extra fatiguing. I like my VS, because I have black text on mild blueish-grey background. Very easy on the eyes.
