i think the u.k obesity rating is higher than that of the states i'm kiding the states are soemthing 53\% overweight and the u.k is 60 something. The bad teeth thing is just a joke, and once again i restate that people from the southern states and the rural midwet have werse teeth in General yes that is a stereotype but i live in the rural midwest and i see alot of it and it is not good. Good Lord once you get like 10 miles from the interstate the dental Hygiene is realy bad. I am foutunate to have parents who grew up in a major city.

darkknight how would the battle of brighton(sp) show the outcome? the germans would have kicked everyones ass including the u.s if japan hadn't attacked when they did wich created a war frenzy in the states and a resign to get involved, the war would have stalemated without the u.s entering on the allies side hello d-day!! how many british troops landed on the beach some i know of but no where as close as to the amount of u.s and canadian troops. With out the troops from nothern american the u.k would have been screwed. sorry for the spelling mistakes.

the brits did decent if you count the fact that the english channel saved their asses from an invasion by the germans.

and whoever here has forgotten the lend/lease executive order needs to remember that the usa was funding the war effort long before they actually sent troops.

now i won't get into codes and intelligence during the war, well, at least not too much.

read up on the navajo code talkers. you'll probably find it interesting, since neither the germans or the japanese were ever able to break the navajo code.

Americans - late twice last century. Great. I thought that it was very good of the Americans to harbour German U-boats in NY harbour (with a "u"!) when they were sinking British shipping. So did the Irish.

I have nothing against individual Americans, but as a nation, come on! They are very powerful only because in wars they have 260 million people to expend (more than other people) and they have vast resources. I resent people saying that Americans are the Gods gift to earth. They buy spray cheese in cans! And all from a nation that has no word for "wanker".

And as for teeth? Hugh Grant is a pillock. There are plenty with nice teeth, but people who make it onto the big screen over here are succeed not just because of their looks and the desire to fulfil a national "dream"...

The Russians have a hell of a lot more people and natural resources (of different types) than America... yippie. China? Same story. If those places ever went truly democratic (or republic, depending on your spin), America would have a very powerful and overshadowing ally, or a deadly and frightening enemy.

Most Americans are stupid, but you can't tell me most brits aren�t stupid. Stupidity is universal it knows no nationality in particular but it is everywhere, welcome to humanity! Most Americans have little knowledge of the outside world but it doesn't make them all stupid just the ones who like to look at red buses. In America the ones who can afford to travel aren�t necessarily the most intelligent, don't take those morons as a representation of all Americans.

The thing about wwII is that no one can say for sure what would have happened if Americans hadn't got in the war but I am pretty sure that if Germany only had to fight Russia on the eastern front and an island nation that was in no place to invade to the west with no aid from the states (who at the time had less than 250 million citizens) it wouldn't have been a hard battle to win for the Germans given there success early in the war. The British did a hell of allot but they didn't have the resources to fight the war indefinitely and would have most likely fallen given 5 years or so and a successful invasion by Germans. The British underestimate the American�s, the war remember was in the pacific too and we split our forces and had to fight on two fronts (three if you count Africa) You think Americans are arrogant look at what you have been saying, that the war was basily won by the British without American aid and troops! BULL SHIT!

I don�t think America�s involvement was the main factor that lead the allies to victory, I do think that honor goes to the Russians but without America the allies would have lost.

And Andrea Corr is a hotty.

I'm not rejecting the USA's great effort in WWII or WWI, and as DKB says it is a great example of what can be achieved. The thing that irritates me most abou WWII and the USA is the films and media about the event. I mean look at U-571. What a pile of wank! It did happen, but the Royal Navy did it before the Americans even entered the war. USA did eventually get an Enigma, but only after D-Day, when they were so easy to get you could buy one with a morning croissant ("I'll have a large coffee, a Danish pastry, a Times and what the heck, an Enigma"). Ever heard of Bletchley Park? That's where Alan Turing et al. broke the Enigma with arguably the first computers long before D-day. And Saving Private Ryan? Seems like the Brits never were in it.

WWII could never have been won without the Americans (at least, not from the West Europe side and it would be left mostly to the USSR). However, thinking about this, I have come to a conclusion. Never, ever, think about irritating a Brit, as they are pugnacious little bastards. The Welsh will beat anyone up, the English have honed their fine skills by frequenting football matches abroad, and the Northern Irish can scare the bejeezus out of anyone. And as for the Scots!?

Anyway, enough is enough. This is off topic, inflammatory and I hate being nasty. Now lets get back to the topic, which was ogling women - a fine blokes' past time.

Hands up all those who think the USSR was communist. Ah, I thought so. Socialism is not communism. Socialism is a social system in which the means of producing and distributing goods are owned collectively and political power is exercised by the whole community. Communism is where goods are equally shared by everyone. It is often also charactarised by revolution of the proletariat (Russia, 1905 and 1917) and the following of a Marx-Lenin doctrine.

Russia was never truely communist nor Socialist nor a republicunder the U.S.S.R. The name doesn't show what it truely was, a dictatorship by the "communist party" names are worthless here are some examples, The Peoples Republic of China? The Democtratic Republic of the Congo? Names don't show what nations truely are but rather what they would like the rest of the to see them as. And communism is an economic system not a political one. And there is a huge differnce(sp) norway and sweeden(however it's spelled) are semi Socialist and have an elected governments so they are democratic-Socialist nations and many eurpeon nations lean in this direction. So the U.S.S.R was a dictatorship that was Totalitarian but clamied to be for the benifit of the workers and this we know isn't true. I am a leftist and i consider myself to be Democratic-Socialist i have more in common with the labour party in the u.k than i do with the democratic party here in the states.

could someone explain to me how the us only entered at the 'tail end' of wwII when by the dates given on this board:

start of wwII: 1939
us enters wwII: 1941
wwII ends: 1945

the us fought for 2/3 of the time of the war?

last time i checked, if you enter into something six years long when it's in its second year, that's not 'coming in at the end.'

Actully that would be the 3rd year and 1/2 of the war. Not that it matters.
Kudos to the dumbfuck Japs for bombing the country that was staying out of the war..until their major pacific harbour got bombed.

I am pretty sure that China will be the next superpower, and that it will displace USA reasonably soon. It is an interesting balance that the Chinese have struck between capitalism and communism. Although oppressive, it seems to work (just).

I'm not Scottish - I have roots in East Anglia but I am a Londoner - I live in SW7; i.e. near to the Science Museum and Harrods for all the out of towners. That means that everyday I am amazed by the fact that people
find buses that are red and guards that change so fascinating.

I was thinking about this earlier - I can't think of a single thing that America has ever exported except its culture. Most of it is just tolerable, others not. Others bits are great (i.e. Frasier and Simpsons).

The reason that I am so bemused by Americans is this: I went to Las Vegas last year. I am 18, so here I can absolutely rat-arsed legally, drive, vote etc. I stayed in the Luxor, and was informed that I mustn't stop to look at the idiots wasting their money in the slot machines. So they put the restaurant (ha - an optomistic name) in the centre, where I have to walk through the slot machines. Duh!? Also, my Mum bought a bottle of wine in a shop in the casino with some other stuff (Coke, crisps etc). Being nice, I took the bag off the counter so that my Mum, who has a bad back, wouldn't have to carry it. I was asked my age, and informed that I couldn't carry a bottle of wine in a plastic bag upstairs because I was under 21. Ooookay. I then walked outside, having to barge throught the large amount of people trying to press hardcore pornography into my hands. What a stupid country.

Oh yeah, back to the thread.

considering we entered at the very end of 41, it was more like 42, so we were in it for 42,43,44,45, 4 years out of 39,40,41,42,43,44,45, 7 years. a bit over 4/7. as for coming in at the tail end, maybe if your talking about WW1. and thats so true, dont bomb an easily angered country when they are neutral....no one should be bombed when they are neutral, because it just isnt a good idea....its as smart as eating moldy cheese...WHO EATS MOLDY CHEESE????
