I think it's taken from paganism, pagans are intimately linked with the number 13, there are 13 full moons in a year I think.
Something to do with menstruation, cycles of the moon, the Old crone, etc. The death card in Tarot is 13. "Rebirth", because the old crone scythes down the ears of wheat and makes way for the new crop, wrongly interpreted by christians. and stuff.
