That was a pretty interesting article...
quote: I doubt it would be that easy to calculate... There's probably too many variables involved to solve it with pure math--at least, to make an accurate prediction. For example, the area's topography would probably need to be considered, the density of the platform they are jumping on, and blah blah who knows what else. it just sounds too complex to me. Well, a billion people have wondered a billion times what would happen if a billion people in a central location jumped up and down at the same time. The UK's 'scientists' put it to the test as < seen > on < /. >. This is very dumb. Apparently there was no timing involved, and the recorded data is very shoddy. However, isn't this easy enough to calculate (you know, with math)? If you take the average weight of a person, estimate a leap of ten inches, and fit it over an area that would allow the number of people it can't possibly be that hard to figure out. I don't know enough physics though, but I don't see any difficulty in doing this relatively simple problem, esp. now that people have collected this 'data' from the UK. What science has stooped to... the problem is, that all the little kids were spread out across the entire COUNTRY.now, if all the people in a good-sized city jumped at the same time (and landed at the same time), then you could make a force that could probobly be registered on a scale. what in the hell were those crazy brits thinking? ------------------ Posted by JLb_8 on Sep. 08 2001,05:35
i remember calculating the change in the earths speed momentum etc. of a person jumping up off the ground. if i can do this at a level i'm sure it cant be that hard to think up a resonable situation whereby topography and density of surface is taken into consideration. what i dont see is why you would want to bother actually doing a pratical experiment on it. no doubt it was 100\% done for P.R rather than the benefit of mankind.------------------ Posted by YouGunnaStopMe? on Sep. 08 2001,11:37
I heard it was a big PR gig to get the children back into science. We even got footage of it on TV over here. I was shocked it made news.

hmmm... with enough jumping british schoolchildren i could create a massive shockwave which would destroy everything in its path, and hold the world ransom!!! i'll be rich, rich as a nazi! muaahahahahahaha.

ok that whole AWE thing? i'm guessing media bullshit. where some miserable reporter has overheard some BS and thought wow i dont think i'll bither checking my facts i'll just make it up as i go along. probably some guy whos a nuclear engineer happened to be walking past the event at the time.------------------ Posted by TheTaxMan on Sep. 08 2001,17:53
But you can't coordiante that large of an event because all of the different interest groups are going to come out of the woodwork and protest. We can't jump up and down! It might destroy the (insert select organism here)'s habitat! We refuse to jump up and down to promote military defense tactics. We refuses to jump up and down becasue it might cause building damage. And so on, until 4 people are jumping really hard in one spot while everyone else walks by and laughs at them. Just do the damned math! ------------------ quote: This message has been edited by TheTaxMan on September 09, 2001 at 12:54 AM |
