Anyone know where I can get any good, well written tutorials (beginner stuff especially) for 3d studio max? That, and where can I download 3d studio max r4 (version 4.2.. or anything higher than version 3, which i have) And yea, I did warez it, and the way I justify that: I'm not paying around 500 us for a product I intend for personal use which I won't be making any profit off of. Fuck 3DS max. Get some proven open source tool under Linux. * I cannot make any recommendations because I have never used any Linux open source 3d modelling tools. I do know they are out there though :P Posted by solid on Jul. 15 2001,00:15
I probably wouldn't.. but if I did I'd have to get linux.

blender's (or bender... I dunno) is free... I think... fuck, I can't remember... all I know is right now my feet hurt from walking around a damned water park all day long... but it equals out cuz all those chicks in bikinis... ------------------ Posted by aletros on Jul. 15 2001,06:51
Blender, for linux is a very good 3d modelling proggie, but dunno about the easy to use for beginner part. They have a windows port for it now, but I couldn't get it to work, but is out there. And free. Depending what you want to do is going to make you choose which proggie you want to "evaluate". Posted by cr0bar on Jul. 15 2001,14:18

Maya rocks hard too.. my buddy that works at Westwood Studios uses it alot. And if you find a place to get R4 or Max4 please let me know =)

what are you trying to do with it? CG or CAD?For CAD i use Rhino3d. its easy to use and quicker than Solidworks. ------------------ Posted by pengu1nn on Jul. 15 2001,16:05
i know where you can get the 3ds max 4 but it is only a 24 hour demo ( ) has character studio too. you'll have to contact me in some other way than these forums, (cr0 doesn't seem to like 24 hr demos that much) i think my email is in my profile, if not its fairly simple "me" at hotm41l

< 3D Cafe > has got a nice range of tutorials, the < Polycount > site used to be good, haven't checked out the resources page recently so don't know how much use it'll be.< Michael Comet > is a cool artist, and this tutorial just happens to show you how to make your very own butt nekkid cyber-chick. This < glossary > might come in handy for some of the terms they use. Most of those links are based around character modelling, but they show some good basic ideas to use in any modelling. There's way too many good sites to list. Just keep hunting - stuff by Potempkin is good, Alcor too (though I'm not so keen on the latter). Posted by solid on Jul. 15 2001,22:33
Actually I just got 3d studio max 4.0 today.. trying to get my hands on 4.2I've been to the cafe, and those other links are very helpful, thanks. And I'm trying to do CG, and later on maybe some itemts/weapons/etc. modeling for game modifications. Edit: Scroll down that page while observing the left hand column. Lot's of other stuff there too.. I'm assuming the other links work too. This message has been edited by solid on July 16, 2001 at 07:28 PM Posted by CowboyNeal on Jul. 16 2001,01:47
3D Studio Max sucks. I was trying to model a stormtrooper suit for myself for the next Trekker's convention and the damn thing hit a polygon limit before I even finished the boots! Fucking ripoff if you ask me.

and that polygon limit would be...

I would ignore cowboy, solid, becaue all he has brought to this forum are dumb comments about what he will eat next.------------------ Posted by Spydir on Jul. 16 2001,03:30
which is the same reason no one likes you, dysorderia. Well, with the exception we already know what you're eating next...------------------ Posted by Beldurin on Aug. 08 2001,14:38
#include /usr/local/2centsI've done some fiddling with Strata 3D (www.strata.com) and have seen some fairly impressive stuff done with it. The engine is basically free, but plugins cost $$. ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Aug. 08 2001,19:03

it seems everyone wants to know about this thing lately. I've spoken to two people, myself included, trying to find out about it......who noticed the schizophrenic comment there? ------------------ quote: < Where's your self re-cocking-spect > Posted by kixzor2 on Aug. 15 2001,11:00
I like using Cinema 4D. Only cause it's really easy to use, and making orgainc shapes is a no brainer. Lightwave is cool. So is Maya, allthough from what I've seen you need shitloads of RAM for really simple renders that can be done on lower level progs. Posted by shifter on Aug. 15 2001,16:46
quote: HAHA...I generally agree with Snark, but he obviously knows nothing about 3D anything. Sorry, last time I checked 3D animation was done on expensive SGI and WinNT rigs...not open source crap. That may work for a webserver (and a few other things), but not for much else. Actual good modeling and rendering software is designed for actual good equipment -- and when you model professionally, you don't do it on free operating systems or free software. haha I can just imagine < Snark trying to render 3D >... Posted by cr0bar on Aug. 16 2001,01:34
The cg for the matrix was done on freebsd machines. More and more studios are going towards linux for their render farms. Re-evaluate what you "know" about the 3D industry. While the current batch of modeling software may not compete with things like alias wavefront's maya, open source/free software are not bit players.

i borrowed a copy of RedHat the other day, and i tried instaling it (on an old 4 gig HD) and i got confused, so i quit.screw that. i dont care if im a 'windows user' its just easier! and not everything runs on linux. so nyurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... /me puts on flame-retardant suit. ------------------ |
