Posted by kai on Sep. 07 2000,21:55

A lot of people say that some other players, such as Soniq, sound vastly better then Winamp and are more stable. I wouldn't know though; I've never used anything besides Winamp.

Actually Bozeman thers a plug called acidspunk that, i think, is better than Geiss. but i guess ill hang with winamp. the shorter PL seems to help out.

Other weird plugins can screw with your system. Particularly General and DSP plugins. Some cross-fading plugins are known to have odd memory leaks, too.

For versatility and ripping I like Musicmatch Jukebox v5.1, but Winamp can't be beat in the plugins department.

I can't get music match to even recognize that a cd is there in the record thing for ripping, can any one help me out? Oh there is nothing better than winamp that i have found, it has the most flexability with it's plugins and stuff, but mine skips alot, how do i fix that, other than only using winamp.

I am also Winamp, but my friend uses Sonique--it's kinda nifty, decent sound, worth checkin' out.

I am running geiss at 640X480 32 bit and I have never seen anything that compares. Even acidspunk.

I use winamp, but a few times, (like 3 or 4 times) over the course of the few years i've been using it, i've had it reboot my computer. It's the weirdest thing, i'll click on a winamp button and boom, my computer reboots, hasn't even always been on the same computer.

Anyone else have that happen to them?

Posted by DrunkNigel on Sep. 24 2000,17:25
why the hell would anyone use anything other than winamp?

I have NEVER had any problems with winamp.

You'll all hate me for saying it, but Windows Media Player 7 is really good. I just really started playing with it... wow. It'll rip CDs, it'll downconvert mp3's to a lower bitrate for portable devices, and download them for you, it'll help with full mp3 library organization (i have well over a 1000 songs), it has some neat built-in visualizations, etc. It appears that after about 4 years of winamp running the show, MS has kicked everybody in the pants again by throwing a ton of money at their development group.

Like I said, most people don't want to hear it, but Media player seems to kick major butt.

Except that it takes longer to start up and requires more memory to run it. Keep in mind that Winamp is just so much more versatile as far as non-visualization plugins. Like one I use that utilizes a joystick/gamepad as a remote. Or one that lets you play VQF files, a format developed by Yamaha that's smaller and higher quality than mp3.

I have been using Winamp since April of 1997. It really was the best thing since sliced bread. I loved it for the last 3 1/2 years. I even used the vqf plugin hoping that it would catch on (seeing as how it is an infinitely superior format) and searched ftp leech sites for my songs (it's funny being 22 and trading 'In my day' stories).

The problem is that Winamp hasn't had much room to innovate. I don't know if it's because of AOL (although we've seen how much influence they really have over Justin ). Most of the really cool developments are plugins. They must be pretty easy to program (never tried). In contrast, there are only 3 visualization libraries for Media Player. Winamp had a lot of support from the community.

I have no point anymore. Winamp totally rulez, but Media player is doing things that I want it to do in a much easier manner. Whatever you want to use is cool, I just make a suggestion.

Let's face it: if WinAmp isn't stable on your machine, you're in a world of hurt anyways.

I am totally winamp. Winamp is stable.. straightforward. As for innovation, you should check out Winamp3.. which Nullsoft is working on. There's some shots of it @ < http://users4.50megs.com/winamp/ >
