Every time I try to run a program that uses direct x now, it says that my beta version has expired, please update. So I downloaded direct x 8 from microsoft, ran it, but it didn't do anything. It just copied the files to a temp dir and said "Setup has completed". I checked on microsoft's help site and it said that it will give this message if you try to install an older version of direct x then you already have. So how the hell do I update my 'beta version' of direct x, which has expired, if there isn't a newer version out yet???

Find a DirectX uninstaller, then reinstall Dx8
