Interface a little cluttered perhaps, but comprehensive feature wise...

I personally prefer AudioCatalyst. It's AudioGrabber with the Xing mp3 codec. It's a good deal faster than the Fraunhofer though some would argue a loss of quality, however small.

I use Musicmatch Jukebox. I like the organization and the ripping. Damn fast and the quality is great! I'm listening right now to some Jazz ripped with it, and it sounds great! It also lets me download the MP3's to my Rio500, so it's a great all-in-one program.

anyone know where to find a good mp3 ripper?

thanks

that depends on how big your hard drive is. i've got around 700 mp3s at this point, none lower than 128, and most at 192.

i guess this is one case where size does matter.

I'l have to agree with kuru on that one, i have 756 and they only take up 2.7 gigs. i mean sure i only have 3 empty gigs now but what the fuck, im not going to cheeze on sound quality for some HD space.

All my tracks are ripped with WinDAC 32 at 12x (Pioneer 32x slot)

and encoded using BladeEnc at 128kbps.

I used to have around 1.5Gb of MP3's but I burnt off 2 cdroms worth, since I now have a hi-fi in my room. Previously I even listened to MP3s whilst playing counter-strike.

w00t!

i use AudioCatalyst. it seems to work fine for my purposes. if there's any difference between the mp3s i make and the CD, i can't hear it. then again, i encode no lower than 192, and my ears aren't that damn good.

i used to use WinDAC and another prog that i can't remember the name of, but with AudioCatalyst, i only have to have one app to get the mp3, so that made life a hell of a lot more convenient.

for ripping, i use realjukebox (yeah, laugh if u want)

it may only hit 96kbps max until you pay for it, but it's fast, and when you have over five hundred mp3s, any more than 96kbps and they're not gonna all fit.

AudioCatalyst is the best MP3 ripper I've ever used. Takes 10 minutes to rip a 60min CD, with normalization to 98\% (I recommend using that because it makes it so that the loudest tones in the MP3 do not get static or noise in them.) Anything less than 128kbps is crap though: I recommend 256 if you have enough harddrive space for it. The quality difference is not noticable to most people, but with good speakers, the 256 sounds fantasticly better than 96 or even 128.

For portable MP3 players, you are better off sticking to 128, because the music quality isn't much better with 256, and you can fit twice as much music (a big bonus when you only have 64MB of listening space)

Interesting, Hellraiser.

Anywhere I can find a version (of any these) that won't just rip half of my tracks?

If you catch my drift.

FOSI is known to distribute AudioCatalyst. See the FTP Shit thread for that one.

Musicmatch Jukebox is my preferred ripper of choice, allowing ripping up to and including 160kbps. I personally can't tell the difference between 160 and one step higher and lower. Of course my hearing was fux0red when I was 14 listening to my music at 120 decibels each night...

< Ars Technica > did a full sound quality comparison of all the major encoders a while ago. I would take a look if you want the very best sound quality; there are differances between programs.

Personally, I use Audio Catalyst. I would never rip below 160; even though my speakers are shitty I can hear very noticable distortion at 128.

*sigh* i had to delete all of my mp3's (over 800) to make room... it was worth it though, made room for movies I have The Cell (awesome movie), Bless the Child, Kings of Comedy, The Replacements, Titan AE, Road Trip and Mallrats (still lookin for clerks, grrr) i'm waiting for a napster type prog for divx, although, pubs will prolly always be the way to go
Posted by Observer on Sep. 12 2000,15:06
When you say divx, you mean divx-encoded avi's or something, right? Ever hear if iMesh and Gnutella? Enough said.

heard of gnuttela you know what divx is, and i'm assuming you know what fxp is... put em together and you'll be pleased i'm sure (don't want to blatantly spam a site, so i won't post a url)... most of the divx i get are the bin/cue rips of the actual vcd's... you have to convert them to mpg to watch them ... although Mallrats was in avi format (very compressed, hurts quality) .. you can also convert them to asf (i believe) and watch them on your dreamcast one bad thing about the new releases though, most have japanese sub-titles .. hmm, i wonder why, lol

Just thought I would mention that a lot also depends on your mp3 player. I recently ripped some LTJ Bukem (incredible drum&bass) and winamp absolutely butchered the playback (even when ripped at 320.) Now I'm using Audioactive and everything sounds fine-just sucks feature wise.
