Forum: The Classroom Topic: Server Change started by: cr0bar Posted by cr0bar on Sep. 01 2001,04:01
Yeah, I'm doing it again. By luck or divine intervention I've been sharing a box with < BoomGames > for quite some time now due to the loss of my previous dedicated server. Now, with more legroom, load averages on the boomgames server should drop and disk space outages should cease. The new server is a dual P3 550MHz w/ 256MB RAM and a 9GB 10,000RPM SCSI disk running FreeBSD. Please let me know of any issues with the site and/or forums that crop up, although I am trying my hardest to have a seamless transition. One more thing I am planning on doing soon is ditching UBB. I am sick of this piece of crap and want to use < ikonboard > which is faster, better written, and has far more features (one of them being that it's free). The only problem is, there are no suitable conversion tools for UBB 5.46 to iB v3. If anyone has the skills and time to help me write some, you would be doing us all a favor. It's part of the transition. Makes my life easier. It will disappear in a few days. Posted by cr0bar on Sep. 01 2001,18:36
It will seem less important in a few days.

My test copy is installed at:< http://www.detonate.net/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi > if you want to play with it. Feel free to register user accounts and play with the stuff in the personal control panels, post topics/polls, whatever. You may start seeing threads and users pop up as I work on conversion tools. It looks like the forum got rolled back by several hours...a bunch of posts and topics are missing.

Do you need test copies of UBB member and thread files for writing the tools?

If it was SQL tables or flat text, I would've written the conversion tools by now :-)It's some sort of large single-file hash table. Perhaps easily usable with some perl module, but I don't know. Posted by Unexplained on Sep. 15 2001,22:43

i think you should download ikonboard and go through it's perl scripts to see how it creates it's database files

i'm a little late with this but...its a real pain in the ass to get here, it takes 3-4 min to load a page (i'm on a T1) which means i can only get to read about 4-5 topics before the end of the day, and less if i want to post something. thats at work, i can't get here from home i also have to do what i like to call precision clicking on your navbar, it was dicussed somewhere earlier about ie6, 5.5 works fine, (don't give me that netscape shit is better) also, i have to click the link after each post instead of being auto sent? ie6? thats all This message has been edited by pengu1nn on September 21, 2001 at 09:58 AM Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Sep. 20 2001,14:57
if worse comes to worse, you can have a Perl script hand off the UBB data to the new BB program via HTTP using wwwlib or something similar. Just call the appropriate CGI scripts with the appropriate data. It's not the fastest or most glamorous solution, but it'll work. Posted by cr0bar on Sep. 20 2001,15:32
Yeah, I was thinking that, but when I did I immediately thought "There MUST be a better way!"I just haven't had time to implement either method... Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Sep. 20 2001,21:11
