Forum: The Classroom Topic: Would anyone here jump in a block of ice like David Blaine did? started by: ganvar Posted by ganvar on Nov. 30 2000,00:56
I have to admit, that David Blaine dude has some balls to freeze himself in that block of ice. If someone offered you a large sum of money, would any of you freeze yourself? I know I sure as hell wouldn't. The main reason is since I am positive that I would die, so there is no point for all the money.

WTF am I watching? I'm relatively in the West side, so I'm seeing it right now. WTF is wrong with this guy? I went hunting for about an hour last Friday when visiting Minnesota, and I think I have pnuemonia. 3 days? They warned against that sort of thing during gun safety class... they even had a movie about it that made me laugh. Most of the crap that he's doing seems pretty setup, but it's kind of neat nonetheless. I think he's a magician, he's doing a stunt/trick, and he's probably not really freezing. It's not over yet, but didn't he go in without a shirt? He has a black shirt on right now... I'm confused. Hopefully everything will be explained soon. He kind of looks like Stile, doesn't he? Posted by kai on Nov. 30 2000,02:09
i don't think i'd mind the cold as much as having to stand in one spot with little sleep for three days.------------------ Posted by MattimeoZ80 on Nov. 30 2000,04:27
he has a point when it comes to freezing your balls... that'd be the hardest. and not having a computer... ------------------ Posted by whiskey@throttle on Nov. 30 2000,15:09
He's an illusionist. It's an illusion.Remember when he did the float off the ground trick? Thank wires and film editing. (that's too bad, cause I was quite impressed at first) Posted by ganvar on Nov. 30 2000,19:34
quote: Well, I can sit at my computer for 3 days with little sleep I know I couldn't stand in one spot for 3 days since I already have back problems. Now I could maybe freeze myself if there was a bed and a computer in there. Having the computer in the block of ice might not be such a bad idea. That would be one hell of a cooling system for your pc, hehe. Posted by aventari on Nov. 30 2000,23:37
can I ask what the hell you guys are talking about? I gleaned it's a magician dude doing a trick where he freezes himself in a block of ice, but thats it. Sounds like it would make for pretty boring TV :] ------------------ Posted by DrunkNigel on Dec. 01 2000,20:03
quote: I saw that! He was just walking up to people on the street and doing it. It looked like he was getting dizzy and the people were like going crazy. I was like "FUCK! How the hell is he doing that shit?" How was he doing that shit anyways? ------------------ Posted by whiskey@throttle on Dec. 01 2000,20:42
You know, I used to do that trick in my bit(I used to do magic at a local country club). To do it, you simply stand a good 4-5 ft away from your audience, with no one on your sides. Standing at a 45 degree angle, put your feet together, with your left foot (I assume the left is the one closest to the audience) slightly ahead of your right, so that you can see 2-3 inches of your right heel. Then, lift your arms (to distract and add emphasis) as you lift your feet. You will be lifting your left foot completely off the ground while balancing on the tip of your right. Obviously, you only want your audience to see your left foot, and the back of your right, off the ground. The higher you can balance, the better the trick. Some guys can go pretty damn high, so the trick isn't as lame as it sounds. Still, it's very simple in theory.David Blaine added a little to this, and there were scenes (medium shot from behind) wherein he completely levitated. I thought, "shit...there's something I've never even heard of." However, just like a couple other of his "Street Magic" tricks, I soon found out (and saw the pre-production tapes) that it was all due to post-production editing and in the case of the levitation, cranes and wires. What a load of crap. |
