although it sounds cheap zonealarm does a pretty good job and its free. ticks me off that there are no advanced configuration option, though... it would be nice to be able to open and close ports manually but the fact is it works. can usually play games just fine with it on, AND run a server.------------------ Posted by Cyrino on Nov. 29 2000,22:07
Or, just buy a router. ------------------ Posted by reman on Nov. 30 2000,00:03

Do any of you l33t h4x0rs in this forum have any internet security tips for anybody? I know that I know a lam0r like me could use a few. This message has been edited by Der_Teufel on November 29, 2000 at 12:38 PM Posted by Willy Pete on Dec. 01 2000,21:30
You'd be surprised. I run BlackIce defender and the amount of trojan and other port scans I get is quite frightening. Getting ADSL when I move into my new flat next week and this sucker's gonna be connected 24/7. That's when security gets useful.Never, ever turn on file and printer sharing if you can help it. That's tip number one. If you do need to, get an OS that's meant to handle access security like Linux, Unix or NT/Win2k. If you do use one of these NEVER log on as Admin. Set up a user login for yourself with just enough rights to do what you need. That way if someone compromises your account they still can't manipulate a lot of admin features/settings. Don't let windows cache your passwords. Turn off the setting in IE that stores encrypted pages on your HD if you use the internet for purchases or banking. Posted by Willy Pete on Dec. 01 2000,21:33
PS: your not a lamor if you're willing to ask and learn. If lack of knowledge was a condition of lameness, then everyone on this board would still be lame, regardless of the tag below your handle. Posted by Lordbrandon on Dec. 01 2000,22:10

I usually just use a hammer for all my macintosh cracking needs.------------------ Posted by Michael on Dec. 02 2000,16:25
How do you get internet security? Answer: you can't. At a certain point you have to face the fact that there is no foolproof way to have a secure computer, let alone secure communications. And example: I live in a college dorm, and every time that I check my mail, log onto my unix account, or anything, I know that my password is being sent across the network in cleartext and that anyone who wants to can intercept it. Any time I read email or talk to someone on AIM, someone else could easily be reading over my shoulder. And as for personal information, anyone who knew my name could come close to reconstructing my life history, especially since my town newspaper posts all its articles online, and since I am mentioned on various websites which anyone could find through a google search. As for the security of my computer itself, I'm not too worried, mainly because it's inside a college network, and therefore the only people who could attack it would be others on campus. And most of the people good enough with computers to be any sort of threat are friends of mine. Posted by Observer on Dec. 03 2000,01:43
ZoneAlarm is a very good freeware firewall. Problems with firewalls, etc. only happen the first time. It can be configured to learn which applications use which ports. Something it does that BlackIce does not is monitor outgoing traffic. That way if a trojan attempts to open an outgoing port, you are notified. Thanks for all the tips. My being a 'lam0r' was kind of a joke, I know that the name goes with the number of posts. My reason for askinga bout internet security is because over the summer someone scanned my IP(which is static cause of my cable modem) on some ports that some trojans use i.e. port 5000, 5001 are for Sockts de Trojs(sp?). So it had my kind of worried and sparked my thirst for more knowledge about security and stuff.I have been using NukeNabber, but it doesn't let you put in more than 50 ports to scan. I am currently running Win 98 SE. I was thinking of installing a firewall, but I have heard that it gives some problems with file transfers and other things i.e. DCC over IRC. |
