I was (still am, kinda) a big fan of the Atari 8-bit line of computers. The were kick ass. For a system designed in '78 - '79
and (I think) released in early '80 they were amazing. Some of the things they can do..Like display list interrupts, mixing different text and graphics modes on one screen, etc.

I've seen hacked Atari 8-bit systems with 1 meg of RAM , flashable OS, and upgraded to a 65816 CPU @ up to 17 mhz..(a 16 bit CPU with 6502 emulation mode - same CPU on the SNES)

Pretty cool stuff IMHO.

This thread will probably die...but maybe not..Any other fans of the Atari or any other old 8 bit systems??

i was (and still am) very fond of the old commodore 64, it had/has some games on it that put most of these newer ones to shame.

the old games were all about playability (well most of them)

And the C-64 can be upgraded with the 65816 @20 MHz. Surprisingly, there are still new things out for it. The only advantage I've seen to C64 emulators is for running PAL programs when you own an NTSC machine, or vice-versa.

lets not forget the c-128.

Ok, change that, lets just forget all about it.

I just got rid of my C-64. I still have a lot of the games. The origional Super Mario Bros. was one of the best games ever made. I also liked Spy VS Spy and the Olympic Games Series. It was one of the best systems for games, ever.

Also, the Amiga series was pretty cool. I liked the California Games, with Louie, Louie for the theme song.

hey observer, do you have any more info on how i can put in the 20mhz chip? i've been meaning to do some cool stuff to the c-64 and since you can pick them up for like 10 bucks a pop i don't have to worry about frying one.

That's a good starting place. Another good place to look is < http://www.cmdweb.com/cbm/index.html >
BTW, it's not just a chip you drop in. It plugs into the cartridge port and contains the JiffyDOS kernal ROM. I like the direction this thread has gone!

What was the C128? Was it just a C64 with twice as much memory?

Curious..

It had a different processor and version of Basic. You could start it in 64 mode to run all your favorite C64 progs. It also had a heavier power supply to support expansion products like REU's and the SuperCPU. It also had a Z80 processor for if you wanted to run CP/M, the predecessor of DOS.

Weee...I just played the old game Commando. Damn that's kewl! And the tune actually rocks. Just downloaded it in the sid-format, kicks ass!!!

Does anyone know how to copy the c64 games to the PC, so they can be played in an emulator? I think I had about 1000 games for it, and some of them actually still kicks. Unfortunately I'm not patient enough to wait for the stuff to load anymore, so maybe you could speed it up on the pc somehow.

Actually there are a couple of options, one involves a custom cable to connect your drive to your PC, or if you have 2 drives, you can make D64 disk images and transfer them to your PC. If you already have a 3.5" floppy drive for your C64, it's not too difficult to do. I'm on ICQ a lot, and I don't mind answering these questions for those that have them.

thanks observer.

my current project for the c-64 is to hook it up to my pc, maybe see if i could set up a c-64 partition on my hard drive and store rom images on it to use, something small like 50 megs would go a long way for c-64 roms.

Sure.. if possible, hook me up with the 128, as long as it runs 64 games and stuff..

The Atari 800 was much more 133t than the 64.
Not as popular though...
Observer, have you heard of the Commodore 65?
Supposedly there were 100 or so produced around '90 I think, but it was never released..

Posted by jrh1406 on Jun. 11 2000,08:51
never had an atari, but i will defend my c-64 to the death, it had some really cool fetures, my dad used to go around telling people that their apple 2e was as fast as our disk drive, with a processor and ram in the 5 and a quarter and full schematics in the user's guide it was a hackers wet dream, too bad i didn't get into hardware hacking until a couple years ago.

i'd love to get my hands on a c-65
there's a whole history on the CBM machines here: < http://www.commodore.freeservers.com/machines.htm >

Just thought I'd clear this up. The stuff the C64 emulator runs are not ROM images. The only ROM images would be those of cartidges. The main emulator file format is in fact a *Disk* image. Ok, time to settle down now.
Posted by jrh1406 on Jun. 11 2000,23:39
Right, sorry about the confusion, i'm just used to calling emulater images roms.

I might actually do some emulater work when i get the chance, even though i can't spell emulater today
