Ha! I have a hat that says "Milwaukee School of Drinking" on the front, and "Honor Student" on the back! It rules!

I didn't go to college nor do I plan to!

Brandon, is that SFAI? I was thinking about going there...

I graduated last year from the University of California, Irvine with a major in Criminology, Law and Society and minor in Drama.

Planning to get my MFA in film direction/production starting in August (hopefully at UCLA).

Currently, I attend N.C.I.V.S. (the big local highschool) and am in OAC.
Next year, I will be taking Computer Engineering.

well my school isn't the best CS school actually, thats why I was orginally a Computer Eng instead. I spent several years just playing with C++ and already knew QBasic, ahhhh how I miss nibbles and that gorilla game

However my stupid school has all cpe and cs majors take one class in C then moves straight into java for the rest of their college life. Java may be nice language but it is the wrong fucking language and no one here knows the first thing about correct programming technqiues because of this fucked up program. If I didn't love the campus and was competent enough to teach myself I would switch schools, but I love it here so I must live with it. Cheers =)

i dropped out of high school twice. still don't have a hsd or a ged. maybe one of these days i will get it. all my friends are in college, so i look like the stupid one of the bunch (which isn't even close to the truth)

i never failed a class because i couldn't do the work or the tests were to hard, i have a problem getting out of bed so i got alot of tardies and i failed some classes because of it, so i dropped out (twice, both my senior year)

note: don't follow my example, i got lucky to find a job that doesn't really care what time i get here (really lucky) and doesn't care about a hsd or any of that shit. it really sux cause eveyone thinks i'm really stupid when i'm just as smart (if not smarter) as them, they all think they can talk down to me and shit.

Actually, MSU has dropped out of the top ten party schools.

Damn.

Cal State University San Marcos
..and CS is da major

For other CS majors, What was yer first language that was taught to you in college? did you know any others already?

The first real language class i had was C and i liked it a lot. I knew a bit of BASIC though starting with the Commadore 64. :]

I graduated Aug '99 from Sonoma State U.

I started out in CIS but switched majors because in the two years I was in CIS, I learned exactly one thing : how to program in LISP (woo.). Everything else I either 1. knew or 2. understood in the first two minutes of class. So I wound up never going to class, and getting C's because although I'd get A's on all my tests, I never did any homework. Eventually I switched to English so I could graduate in less than ten years.

English is a pretty good major, as it turns out. After a few Lit classes you can talk intelligently on a wide variety of topics, not just computers

uhh... freshman, at millbrook high school. It's actually not to bad of a school, but the athletic teams have to good of a rep. If you're not one of the best, the coach cuts you like the rest. Education wise, well... I guess it's ok, but the teachers are kinna stupid. Not like "duhh... how do you spell my name again?" stupid, they just lack common sense. Not all, but quite a few.

Yeah, anyway... Anyone know a good university in the fields of psychology or philosophy? I figure I'll learn my computer stuff here in high school, on my own of course, and use psychology or something as a fall back (oh, what a fall back...).

I am a senior in high school in Woodbridge, VA. I plan on going to Virginia Tech(because I got accepted early decision) and majoring in either computer engineering or computer science.

If you have the choice, I'd choose Computer Engineering (which I did). It's a relatively new degree most places. You'll probably have a lot of the same programming classes as the C.Sci's, but the main idea is a lot different.

Comp Sci. prepares a person to be knowledgeable about computers... research, theorize, teach, etc. much like a scientist.

Comp Eng. is geared more towards practical application of technologies, and forms your way of thinking such that no matter the tool, you can use its properties to form a solution to a problem. They say that any type of engineer has the option of being a completely different kind of engineer than their education.

Right now the job market is in desparite need of computer engineers. CSci majors can fill these positions, but they generally don't think the same way that an engineer does.

It's all up to you. I'm happy with my decision. I went to an engineering school that doesn't have a CSci program... although they do have a Software Engineering degree now... that would have been cool.

Posted by Der_Teufel on Dec. 02 2000,22:01
Yeah, I am pretty much set on Computer Eng. I was accepted to the college of engineering at VT. They said, when I was there on a tour last year, that it is easy to switch between the courses because the CEs still take alot of the same CS classes as the CS majors. I do like my AP CS class but sitting there and typing in all the code and debugging gets kind of boring. However, I think it is really cool that I am able to make the computer do what I want it to do.
Posted by Sithiee on Dec. 03 2000,00:32
AP CS was awesome...except when my teacher wanted to teach. cause he wasnt very good at it...i had to teach a lot of the class again in a way they understood...except for that damn russian kid...but he paid me 80 dollars to do his final project. i made tic tac toe. but not your momma's tic tac toe. this tic tac toe kicked ass, and rarely lost. i beat it the easiest though, because i knew what it was going to do most of the time.
Posted by Der_Teufel on Dec. 03 2000,01:01
Yeah AP CS is great, but my teacher is a real bitch. She wants us to write all our programs by hand and will rarely let us use the computers. She doesn't really know how to program in C++ either. So I have taught myself everything that I am supposed to know fromt he book. Even though the book sucks too. It has so many errors in it, grammatical, wrong answers, and faulty code.

writing out code is awesome, because you dont have to be 100\% correct. on the AP exam you get mad leniency (sp?) cause you have to write it by hand and you cant test it out. except my hand does get tired after a while...
