How long does it take you to fall asleep? I roll around in bed for what seems like 2 or 3 hours before I finally fall asleep - very counter-productive. What do you do to fall asleep, and how long does it take?

Getting regular exercise helps me fall asleep the way I like to--right away. If I'm stressed out, worried, or have extra energy (from sitting around all day) then I'll lie around for 2 to 3 miserable hours wishing I could fall asleep.

Cold medicines that have drowsiness as side-effects are really great for inducing sleep, but I only use these when I actually have a cold. Other meds such as vicodin will help me fall asleep, but as soon as I drift from consciousness into sleep, it's like being thrown into a really bad dream, and half the time I will sit bolt upright and gasp or something. Not fun. Usually I can overcome this and go to sleep, but the dreams are really fucked up and unpleasant, and I wake up worn out.

One thing that I cannot stand when I'm trying to sleep is voices. If someone is watching TV, listening to the radio, or talking on the phone, I can forget about sleeping till they cut that shit out. Even if I can't make out what's being said, my brain won't tune it out. Music is the next most annoying thing. Of course, the best sleep I've ever had has always been during nine hours of complete silence and darkness, which usually I only encounter when I'm backpacking.

As for the wakeup, if my computers are off then I usually can sleep as long as I'd like to. The hum of the fans, however, will wake me up instantly when I start to become more alert in the morning--rolling over and going back to sleep becomes impossible.

I pay a lot of attention to my sleep patterns because I really fucking hate being sleepy during the day. One thing I've noticed and use to my advantage is that if I wake up after about seven hours of sleep, do something (like drive my sister to school...fun), then sleep for a few more hours, those last few hours will be full of lucid dreams. Who doesn't like those?

Fin.

while i dont think it takes me quite that long to fall asleep, it does take me somewhere close to an hour. i also wake up at least once a night too. ive heard that things like that can be related to sleep apnea (breathing irregularities while you sleep). there are studies being conducted right now that may link ADD to sleep apnea (the irregular breathing disrupts your sleep causing you to wake so you dont get a good nights rest) and in some cases removing ones tonsils can "cure" thier ADD. a bit off topic, but interesting nonetheless.

I heard somewhere that is takes an average of 7 minutes for most ppl to crash.
Light has a big effect on sleep, like brain waves take on the same pattern of the light waves.
I can't sleep with music on if I am paying attention to the music, but if it is background noise it just blurs inot the background and is no problem.
Since it is summer and i have no job i haev no diurnal schedule. In fact I went to bed at 6 am and got up at 5 pm today.

Depends if I'm tired. Sometimes I'll wake up quite late, then not sleep all night, then collapse in bed about midday and get to sleep pretty much immediately.

Most of the time I'm pretty much inable to maintain a getting up in the morning/going to bed at night cycle. I wake up about 7 AM, I'm then unable to get to sleep until at least 4am that night, the < Banshee Screamer alarm > wakes me up, for about long enough to turn it off and flop back into bed. I'll then sleep until about 6PM. My pattern is then royally upset for the next few days and then the cycle repeats - This is getting quite annoying.

how weird. i fell asleep around 12 (midnight) and woke up naturally at 5 this morning. i laid for two fucking hours before giving up on the falling asleep.

i used to be really paranoid, when i was littler, of people who were coming to kill me or some stupid shit like that. then i discovered masturbating.

demonstration.

*fap*fap* !!splat!! ..(two seconds later).. *snore*

so needless to say i have slept well for the past three years. every night.

I sleep pretty well. Music... TV... Lights... they don't wake me up. I RARELY dream. For a while I even started turning off my alarm in my sleep.
<<getting off track>> I acutally had to start putting my alarm clock in different places each week so that I'd wake up when I tried to turn it off in my sleep and it wasn't there.

<<back on track>>
The only time in the past year I can remember being woken-up was the 7 point earthquake we had (and I went right back to sleep when it was over).

Obviously I'm not normal, so let me give you advice that helps most people.

1) Turn down the heat a little. It's hard to sleep when you're swetting!

2) Get some comfortable sheets. It make all the difference in the world.

3) DUMP THAT BLADDER! It's tough to sleep when you gotta go... even a little.

4) DUMP THAT COLON! Belive it or not... it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to sleep with something up your ass... or so I've been told...

5) DUMP THAT PROSTAIT! melk0r was right-on on this one!! Wack-off and you'll be out like a light!

6) Listen to cr0bar. He got all the other major points.

Finally... if nothing works... go to the local college and get a sleep study done. Most will do it for free and once the find the cause of the disturbance, it's usually fixed fairly easily.

Oh, and I have about 6 pills of vicatin left if you want to buy it.

speaking of sleeping patterns it is time i crashed (i am PST). At least this way i sleep through Day time tv.

I have the most irregular sleeping patterns out of anyone I know. At any given time I happen to go to bed, there seems to be an equal chance of either staying awake for 2 hours laying there or conking out in ten seconds.

I guess i'm the oddball in terms of music too, cause i've found that if I turn something up to a volume level where it becomes part of the room (like, i don't have to strain to hear it, it's just there) that usually helps me fall asleep quicker.

Sleep medication, and for that matter, any medication which is supposed to get you drowsy doesn't seem to really effect me unless I take a double dose. I don't know if it's some physiological aspect or if i'm just good at fighting it off without realizing it, but not too long ago it took me until 1pm to fall asleep, and that was after yawning and being tired the whole previous day, too.

when you're lying there try to see if there are any very low level noises or lights coming from somewhere and also whether you're bed is comfortable as the tiniest things can affect your mind.

if that fails just drink some beer

I am a night person, so if I had the choice I'd sleep all day and live in the nights. However, school makes me get up at 6 am on at least 3 days a week, so I am on an average of 5-6 sleep hours a night... usually, I am so tired that I fall asleep like a stone as soon as I hit my bed.
Music often helps me fall asleep, I prefer instrumental music like Spanish guitar music or some trance stuff. Being at the comp also can help me get tired and fall asleep easily...

i have almost no real pattern to sleep. when i'm tired, i go to bed. when i'm not, i'm awake.

either way, it takes me at least 30 minutes to fall asleep, but usually closer to an hour.

i prefer to sleep in the daytime, with some sort of noise going on, and be awake at night when it's quiet. i'm just weird, i guess.

why is it that when im at home in my comfortable bed it takes me an hour to sleep, but when im sitting in an uncoforatable plastic chair in a lecture hall at school im out in like 5 min?
Posted by DuSTman on Jun. 30 2001,19:16
That's probably due to your lecturer.

I have this thing, I have to admit - Snooker commentry sends me straight unconscious..

Posted by Non on Jun. 30 2001,19:46
So DuSTman you just need to record some billard games off the tv and play them when you can't sleep.

it takes me an hour to get to sleep usually, but sometimes i just lay in bed the whole entire night. here are some hints that i have found work for me:

que up about 30 minutes of music in winamp, where the songs get progressively softer. that usually calms me down and gets me drowsy.

get the room fairly cold, and have lots of blankets. this works really well for me. i can't stand the heat.

also, it helps to have total darkness. for me though, i don't like total silence. if it's totally silent in my room (which it is often since i'm in the basement), thoughts fill my head to replace the void. also, i have tenitus so if it's quiet then i hear a ringing in my ears which gets louder and louder until i start yelling out expletives.

my favorite environment for sleeping is where there is a soft humming or vibrating noise, like in my dorm. i find it really relaxing. also the sound of rain, or cars in the distance.

I can fall asleep anyplace. If im tired and i have time to kill its nap time. At night Im asleep in 10min or there is no chance in hell of it happening. Cspan works wonders for sleep. these guys just drone on and on and....SNORE!

Lights, TV, Radio, gun fire, cars, trucks, nothing wakes me up.

Try to sneek up on me and im up, alert, and ready to go. Guess some things from the Army just stay with you.

That and the fucking cat. He just sits there and stares at me from like an inch away. I wake up to this face right in mine. I think he is trying some kitty mind control thing on me(I am your god, you will feed me and clean my litter box, NOW). And he is teaching the other one his tricks. Now i wake up with 2 cat faces in my face. Talk about something to wake up to. I always said i would love to wake up with pussy in my face but this is getting nuts!

I just remember that some weeks ago I fell asleep in a disco. It was some basement disco in Prague, sorta cozy... we had been travelling, and had a short night, and then a long day... anyway, I was really tired. I didn't want to dance, so I just got myself a drink, and after that I cuddled up in a corner. Then it occurred to me I might take my coat for a blanket... next thing I know was that I woke up and all my friends were like "How cute! You were actually sleeping for more than 30 minutes!"

What do we learn from this story? - You can sleep everywhere. You just have to be tired enough.

If you want to fall asleep, don't drink ANY caffeine after 6PM. I started doing this my third year of college, and I was able to get away with about an hour less sleep each night, as well as an hour of tossing and turning. Now, when I hit my bed, I'm out unless I'm trying to stay up. No, even then.

What wakes me up? The cat. All whining and coming in from outside to bring me a dead mouse. Thanks, Tita. That's what I need at 4:30AM.

And, alcohol helps me fall asleep greatly. As well as going to bed late does. I also take my time settling down for bed. I take the contacts out, brush my teeth, change, and watch a little TV while I settle down. That helps a lot too.

at least your cat brings you things. mine just torment me.
